I have no idea where this carb came from. 73 coupe, early 80s crate engine. electric choke. PO did a terrible job of painting the engine. A future project for me. Took pictures of all the markings I could find. Hopefully they will be clear enough to help.

Need the stamped number on the driver's side of the carb body that runs vertical and will start with 170 then five more numbers.

Hi CK,
That carb number comes up:
1981-1986 Chev/GMC/Truck BOP
So it was a widely used carburetor.
Regards,
Alan

Maybe it is 17084268 ??
1708 = built in the 1980's
4 = exact year of mfgr. 1984
2 = 4bbl, federal emissions standards
8 = ? (0,1,2, chevrolet/4, buick/5, Oldsmobile/6,7, Pontiac)
8 = automatic transmission ( even #'s are auto , and odd #'s are manual trans)

Built on the 188th day of 1984

It's a 1984 Truck carb that's been commercially rebuilt. It's a poor choice for a carb on a '73 Vette, since it's not only a carb likely to have significant problems due to the commercial rebuild, but it's the incorrect model/series carb (it's an M4M carb instead of the correct '73 4MV carb) for your car and it's equipped with the fat primary truck rods to really mess up your WOT performance... I wouldn't recommend using it or putting any effort into it.

Thanks all for the info. Lars thanks for the details. Other than one incident of low power caused probably by dirty secondaries the carb has worked well. The car doesn't get pushed too hard. Shift point is usually under 3k. Is this carb really that evil? Or do I need to push the car more? Running high test E10. Add Stabil when I know the car is going to sit for long periods, but have no idea what abuse POs gave it.

Storms are blowing trees down. Focus now is getting the chain saw running. Carb/fuel delivery problem also.

It's not an evil carb, but it's not easy to set up for a Vette application if you want to optimize it: The booster venturies are set up for low-rpm response, and you'll be lucky to find jetting specs for it to use as a baseline - this makes it tough to identify any issues caused by the commercial builder. If the carb is running well, that's great. If it's not, setting it up right can be a trick.
