Default T top weatherstripping

I'm going to look at a 72 coupe with t-tops. On the phone the seller said the piece on the windshield area shows some signs of leaks (unk if rust or what) but says heavy rain, it might drip some. I realize (from the good intro video) that I should check the A-pillars, but if that appears good, seems that weatherstripping isn't a "tasky" thing. Any advice? They claim 42K miles, so I hope the A pillars don't show bad. Unk about previous owners(s) other than they said it was a FL car.

the tops are adjustable to some extent to increase seal pressure but on a car of this age you have to check for possible rust around the whole windshield not just the A pillars.

This is what my car had for damage. Fortunately the worst of the damage was limited to the upper windshield frame.

If it is dripping...I would not be surprised that it has PROBLEMS. Much like the above posted photo from 'fms93gt'.

I didn't see much rust when I looked at the car but i knew it leaked pretty bad. I had a donor piece welded in.

How would you suggest I try to see about this on the seller's car? I don't think he'll let me take it apart but maybe something I could poke around with on the windshield frame. This, of course, if the door jamb area doesn't look too bad.

The interior trim has a metal backing and it will rust if it has been exposed to a lot of water. Mine was completely shot. I could put my fingers under the trim piece and feel completely disintegrated metal.
There were some rust stains on the edges of the windshield.

Okay, thanks. I do have a lift available to me to raise the car for inspection as well. I'm not concerned about "replaceables" such as a muffler, more so the frame, etc.

I will and I guess if someone refuses, it's a red flag. I will be checking it out tomorrow and since it's suppose to rain tonight and I think the car in question is outside, I'm going to feel the carpets. I was thinking of taking a very slender screwdriver and trying to feel up under trim. Sort of like poking into a 2x4 to check for rot

Be considerate. Ask before you poke.

Of course, it's their pride and joy,....I looked at a 69 this afternoon and found it difficult to check around the windshield because I am sure it was replaced at some point and a lot of glue was used to hold it, blocking view. I didn't poke on the inside but noticed the T-tops were noticeably different with the gaps. The right one looked straight however the left one had almost an inch gap from the T-bar to the panel and was depressed (not flush) with the car by 1/8 inch. On the car, they looked okay. Sitting in the car, they looked way misaligned.

Hi m,
The positions of the roof panels are adjusted at four points on each panel.
If a person doesn't have an AIM, and understand what needs to be done to move the panels around, aligning the panels well is quite unlikely.
A typical windshield post and and windshield installation should look something like this. This pic is about half way up the right side a-pillar.
Regards,
Alan

I hate to write this....BUT if you are spending a lot of $$$$ on a car. I would NOT have any problem with removing the door sills...checking to see if the body is square with the frame via the 2 index points...and then look behind the kick plates...that can be removed to see how much rust is collected on the body mount in that area. How can I write this...BECAUSE I do this on Corvettes that are brought o me for inspection before someone purchases it....and that is if it passes the initial VISUAL checks that I know where to look and feel first.

I have some people who do not allow me to even raise up a wheel for bearing inspection...and that is when I tell the potential buyer...RUN FROM IT!!!!!!! And I do it right in front of the seller. Houses are inspected thoroughly before you buy it.....and KNOWING the surprises that can show up when parts are removed.....the car that you fell in LOVE with can be a BIG P.O.S!!!! and NOW...not worth anything due to the costs to get it safe and sound. DO NOT ask me how I know all about this.

YOU, the buyer, are the one paying for the car. You have every right to reasonable and prudent inspection of it.
Period.
