Default 76 Shift Console

I am beating my head against a wall here and am hoping somebody might be able to provide assistance. I have started re doing the interior on my vette and am attempting to install a new shift console plate with no luck. I have a new heater and re did the center gauges okay. But I am now at the final part of putting the shift plate back on and no matter what I do I cannot get this thing to sit flush and screw in. I also cannot get it set to where I can put the car in park without the slider plates buckling into or under the heater. Seems like something is getting stuck somewhere causing it to sit off, but of course there is no way for me to get under there and see what is getting stuck. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I can remember fighting with this reinstall myself. As i remember, the black slide shields where binding with something under the plate and once these shields where properly in place, the plate fit in, but still needed a little forcing.

This is how the console looks. ..

Can't recall the difficulty I had with clarity but something had to slide under something else... possibly around the hvac control?

Regarding the plastic slider... on the second or third time redoing it I artifically bent the plastic slider down in the front ensuring it would dive down quick enough to clear.

kolczk,
*** BOLD print is not me YELLING...just placing emphasis on what I am writing.
I have done more of these that I can count...and that also includes using NEW shift console and trying to get the parts to fit.

I will say that they WILL FIT...but it is how you integrate them is what makes the difference.

A lot of it has to do with MAKING SURE that your shifter console is CORRECTLY INSTALLED ....meaning that it is screwed into place and the hand brake console and close out panel is ALL CORRECT.....because this will let you know that you have the shifter console positioned far enough FORWARD.

If you car to...I can walk you through it over the phone if you care to call me. If you want this type of help....PM me and I will give you my shop phone number. This way is faster ...versus me typing it out for hours. Because I need to know some things while it is getting done.....and that is assuming that all parts were re-installed into the shifter plate JUST LIKE they came out of it.

The choice is yours or anyone who is having problem in this area that may read this.
