Default Cowl Screens

I'm wanting to put screens in my 72 to keep trash out of the vent fan and vent duct. I bought some of those aftermarket plastic screens and it doesn't even pretend to cover the openings.

So who has formed their own screens, and what did you use, and pics, of course! Oh, and if you found a way to make those plastic ones work, I'm interested in that info as well. Tnx!

72 and you still have the wiper door functioning?

I have made some and installed them and even with the wiper door out...it was a bit of fun getting the configuration correct.

Yeah, can you believe it? lol. At this point, the cowl area is devoid of stuff to get in the way, so figure this is a good time to fit screens in there.

I've read that the screens didn't start until the '73 model, and it's crazy how exposed even the vent fan is to leaves, water, Chupacabras, etc.

You have any pics of the project?

Hi ncv,
If the wiper door is adjusted well it should fit pretty close to the windshield. 1/4" maybe?
Then perhaps a long piece of regular screening fastened under the wiper bay grill might do it.
Maybe?
Regards,
Alan

I took black fiberglass window screen, and epoxied it to the bottom of my cowl and rear deck astro vents. If you didn`t know it was there, you`d never notice it!Cheap & easy fix to keep debris out!

Sorry,,No photos of that project. But I made a template out of piecing together thick paper and then transferring it over to the expanded aluminum screen material that you see behind the custom hoods with openings in them. The I used the black plastic. rubber door edge molding you can get at an auto parts store to make it more refined and that special touch....instead of a cut/jagged edge. Mounting it to the plenum...will up to you.

This is the type of screen I use when making the screen you are wanting to make. Then I edge it in the door edge molding as previously mentioned.

DUB, I like that method. Just shape it to fit. Or I may just do the screen under the grill. Choices! Tnx!

Thanks for the tips and assistance, everyone.

I finally figured out how to make those replacement screens work, and attached a couple pics. I was thrown by the mounting method, which is done with screws into the plastic studs on later models (or on all models that had those factory screens). The screen's screw studs will need to be removed to work on older models with wiper doors since the wiper door mechanism mounts at the same locations. I haven't tried an actual fit yet, but as long as the thickness of the screen itself doesn't interfere with the wiper door alignment, it'll be a great.

The final fit should improve over these pics since there are mounting tabs (slots) that attach to the lip of the front clip. Sweet.
