Default Vented Gas Cap

I'm restoring a '71 (350 base motor). How would I know if I needed a vented or non-vented gas cap?

Hi B.
Originally 71 cars had a sealed gas cap.
The tank had a vapor separator mounted on it's left side (you can see it if you look up pas the muffler.
A hard line ran forward on the driver's side to a vapor canister mounted on the rear side of the wheel well apron.
2 hoses run from the canister to the carb.
If this system is hooked up a sealed cap would be appropriate.
People find that with a sealed cap and operating vapor canister the raw gas smell in the garage is often decreased.
Regards,
Alan

The vapor separator, rubber hoses and hard line:

The canister:

The 2 lines running from the canister to the carb. (There is another small line below the larger hose that can't be seen.)

Alan71 is spot on. But, to clarify a little more...

On the 71, the vapor recovery system was used as the method to vent the tank, also. IF the vapor recovery system is disconnected/plugged-off, a vented fuel cap needs to be installed to allow the tank pressure to equalize.

Thanks for the replies. My system seems to have the vapor canister hooked up so I'll switch to a non-vented cap to see if that reduces the garage fuel odor. Thanks for the pictures, they were helpful in understanding the system.

Interesting topic/thread. Thanks for posting. Does anyone know a sure-fired way to test the functionality/effectiveness of the system? Not being the original owner, I've often wondered how to tell if my '72's system is compromised in any way. The last thing I want is for the tank to collapse. I keep a vented cap on because of my "phobia".

Thanks.

Hi rr,
This is the 'diagnostic' info for the "Evaporative Control System" section of the 1971 Emissions Control booklet.
I don't know if this might be of help to you or not.
Member War Bonnet has another emissions control publication that might have some additional info for you. He may see this post or you might pm him.
Regards,
Alan
