Default Kick Panel Screws

I don't see, nor do I see any evidence of, what my kick panel screws actually screw into.

Should there be a clip or J nut down there? AIM shows a diagram of the passenger side but I'm not sure what it's trying to tell me.

72 Coupe no AC

Thanks

Hi B,
The screw is an oval headed chrome plated self tapping screw that screews into a hole drilled in the fiberglass hinge pillar just to the rear of the lip that forms the the duct that the kick-panel air door fits in.
Look with a flashlight, or feel for it with your finger tips. Often the kick-panel isn't installed in quite the correct position so the location of the hole in the fiberglass isn't obvious, but it's there.
Regards,
Alan

The location and size of the hole is shown in the AIM in UPC 1 asm, Sheet E10, View B. Is that what you're looking at?

Default for what it is worth...

for what it is worth, I have taken the dash all out on a 68, 72 and 76 which I thought was mostly all original, who knows for sure, and have not found this screw nor evidence that it was ever installed. Agree with Alan, it is in the AIM. IMHO, I would not worry about it and leave it off. By the time you get it jammed in there, anchored with the dash pad and door sill plate, I believe it is not going anywhere. Hope this might help.

Thanks gentlemen. I got my camera phone as far up as I could and took a picture and I do see a hole. It looks like someone actually made a mark inside the large vent to point the way. Unfortunately it does not come close to lining up with the correct hole in the kick panel. Someone, previous owner or assembly line, I don't know, drilled a third hole in the kick panel that would have lined up, but I decided to fill that hole. Fortunately, my drill "found" a hole that lines up with the correct hole in the kick panel.
