Default Can't Remove Roadwheel.

Has anyone here found the problem of doing a simple removal of a road wheel, and found it stuck onto it's hub?

I mean it's on there, the Left Rear. I started with a rubber mallet going around the tire's circumference so as to maybe get a vibration going to loosen it. No.
Then I sprayed my favorite penetrating oil in the stud holes and wheel center. After 10 minutes; No, still stuck.
Then a long 2X4, end against the Arm-to-shock mount, and tried prying the wheel loose. No.
Then I positioned the 2X4 onto the inside of the wheel rim, under the car, with the other board's end on the opposite side of the car, and hit it with a small sledge a few times. Not budging.

Now I don't want to bend the mother. I'm concerned about that. The wheels were powder coated, and I believe that's the cause of this problem, although the Right Rear wheel came off with no problem for this brake bleeding job. I do feel good though that I found this problem in my garage, and NOT somewhere on the road.

Any thoughts on safe removal? Thanks.
Steve

Put a couple of lug nuts on, screw them on just a couple of turns.
Lay on your back and kick the inside of the wheel/tire. Kick it hard.
Be safe doing it. Use more than just a jack.

Default Loosen The 5 Lug Nuts Then Drive It Back And Forth

Try loosening the lug nuts about 2 turns each then slowly drive it back and forth on your driveway. Then see if it'll come off. Yeah, I also think the powder coating made the pilot hole a bit smaller and that's why its stuck. Once you get it off sand the bore with a coarse sandpaper and also the O.D. of the hub to remove any rust that has built up. A previous owner might have beat on the face of the hub at one time so make sure its not peened over a bit.

Or if you have a long 2x4 stick it under the car from the other side up against the inside of the tire and give it a whack or kick. Keeps you from under the car.

Wish you were closer. I love breaking wheels loose.

Get someone else to do it after you tell them how hard it is and everything you've done. It will pop right off for them.

Since I live alone, I always worried about getting the neighbor's attention with my rotting flesh smell than any thing else.

It's on jacks (trailing arms near the body) AND blocks (under the strut/shock mount). But I just don't feel right kickin' on it while layin' under the car. Just me.

Thanks. I meant to describe that, like you did so well here. As they say, been there, done that, with no luck.

Or, maybe the leaking blood/body fluids slowly flowing out from under the garage door might get someone's attention too.

Yeah it's kinda funny, in a sick, macabre sort of way. But I know this type of thing happens more often than we dare care to think. The Safety people here know the stats for sure.

Or, thinking about it, perhaps loosening the nuts as you described and then after lowering the car on the ground, push on the fender's side (near the end) and the bumper's side ('73) in a lateral back & forth, yawing motion. Perhaps, in this matter too, the car's weight will help in loosening the stuck SOB.

Just get under it and kick it like it owes you money. Its a little unnerving the first few times, but it will pop off. Be sure to leave a few lug nuts on or its going to go flying across the garage.

Try heating with a heat gun around the center hole just before doing the kicking and prying, might help.

How about a length of 2x4 at the base of the wheel. One that comes close to the opposite wall. Then stick a bottle jack between the end of the 2x4 and the base of the wall and jack the 2x4 against the wheel. That should generate sufficient force to pop it off.

Kick it on one side from the outside of the car, not from under it!!!!
I was also going to say put the lugs in loose, and use the weight of the car as others have suggested.
Don't hit the rim with a hammer, or it will bend/ruin it. Don't ask me how I know

Method #1: (the gentle approach) Spary PB Blaster rust penetrant around that joint and let it sit overnight. It might wiggle free in the morning.

Method #2 (the sure thing) Get a 4-5 foot long 2x4. Grab it at one end and use the other to hit the hell out of the inside of the stuck tire (raised off the floor, of course). It will come off. Then wire brush the heck out of that pilot-ring and give it a light coat of primer/black paint.

{I gather that '75 has had this happen, also. }

I like this idea too. Low 50s this morning, but still, with the heat gun, it could work enough to free it.
