Will i gain anything by switching my stock intake, apart from weight reduction and would my Q-jet with divorced choke work if so?
I want to keep my stock hood, so it has to fit under that.
Engine is going to be rebuilt to a 468cui with Straub rollercam this winter.
I changed my '72 454 to the early Edelbrock single-plane Torker and various Holley square-bore carbs back in the mid-'70s. Air cleaner options were much more limited then, so I used an aluminum scoop that stuck out through the hood. I suspect one of the newer low profile cleaners might fit without cutting. As for performance, there was no comparison. Torque and fuel mileage both went up (also had headers and an RV cam). I was never even tempted to go back to the stock manifold. It was a totally different car.
The Torker II was the only one I found that fit under the stock BB hood. I dynoed it, and found that it lost quite a bit of torque, but made about 20 more hp up top. I also went from the Q-jet to a Holley 750 as the Torker II is square bore. I had to cut the choke horn off is it got too close to the aircleaner lid.
Headers got the torque back + more and really bumped hp.
How? I had that intake years ago with a Holley and the choke was almost touching the aircleaner lid, which in turn was almost touching the hood. With an adapter to get a q-jet on there you'd be even further up.
GM has an oval port intake for the 454 that is similar to the factory aluminum rectangular port intake on the 427's and 454's with rectangular port heads. If I remember correctly, it should fit with a holley under the stock hood. Intake is 4.45" tall and is part number 12363406. It's $271 at Summit. I have an L88 hood, so I was able to squeeze a Edelbrock RPM Air Gap intake, Quick Fuel 750, and a standard low profile air cleaner with 3" filter element. It's close, I run a button head bolt instead of a air cleaner stud and nut for extra clearance. I had a regular hex bolt, but it was rubbing on the hood a little. It's another reason why I wanted to go to solid mounts.

The stock intake isn't as bad as everyone seems to say.
My 1974 LS4 went 13.44 @ 104 with the cast iron pancake intake and q-jet.
I have a 427/390 hp aluminum intake all ready to go on my new motor. I also have an edlebrock performer 2-0 sitting around....
****Believe it or not, the plenum is actually slightly deeper on the stock manifold than the performer, despite the lower carb pad height!
That's pretty good! I don't know how much power I picked up, but my engine woke up with RPM intake and 750 quick fuel carb. I could barely break the tires loose with the stock intake and q, now I have to be careful with the throttle going around corners and taking off from stops. But the Qjet on my beast was shot out and the timing was way off, so a lot of it could have been the carb and timing issues. When I stomp on the throttle at speed now, it plants you in the seat and chirps the tires on the 1-2 shift.
Edelbrock makes their "air gap" intake for the 454. Does anyone have one on their car? Design theory is good, but it looks like it is higher than stock. I have only about a half inch clearance to spare with an Edelbrock that mimics the GM intake, but is square base instead of spread bore. RA

I run the RPM air gap on my 454. But I have a L88 hood on mine. GM makes an aluminum intake for oval port heads that is just like 390hp 427 intake.

Thanks- I have the long version of the BB hood, so it looks like it will fit. I'm actually doing some advance planning before I buy a bunch of stuff and then have to figure out how to make it work, like whoops! now gotta cut a hole in hood. (the PO of my car used a fairly long threaded rod for the wing nut to hold the air cleaner in place. I know cause there is a repair in the hood where he apparently slammed the hood shut without checking clearance.)

I barely have clearance with the L88 hood. I had to use a button head bolt instead of a stud and nut on the carburetor. I am using a Summit drop base air cleaner on top of a quick fuel 750 double pumper.

quick fuel 750 double pumper How do you like that carb? I have a QFT 750 like yours, but without a choke. It runs like crazy, but of course starts a little hard when cold. I'm considering replacing it with one with a choke for drivability.
Love the QFT carb. Mine doesn't have a choke. Hard to start when cold. But it doesn't get too cold in AZ. Just have to pump it a bunch and keep the rpms up until it warms up. It was spot on out of the box. Just had to set idle speed. Intake and carb really woke up my engine. I just need to upgrade exhaust now. Still running factory pipes behind my headers right now. Looking at getting a Pypes system for it.
