Unfortunately, believe its got to come out thru the top. That means moving the master cyl and PB booster

You can search for more info, its been discussed before.

Hi cdw,
It's the 3 legs on the tank that make it tricky to remove as m350 suggests. The master cylinder needs to be pivoted out of the way.
I'm not sure about the 'clutter' though since it's really only the upper corner and one side that's visible in the engine compartment.
Regards,
Alan

Yeh, it was a few years before I took mine out, I agree with Alan.....

when removed, I found that my '72 tank was made in the form of a gas tank, and the metal flex had taken it toll and stress fractured the thing....2-4 splits in the metal, hairline, but enough to assure it not holding vacuum no matter WHAT......

I seem to remember putting mine in from the bottom by taking off the rear inner fender metal support but that was about 5 years ago and I could be mistaken.

looks like you guys are right. with the master cylinder out of the way it might come out ok. just did a brake job last month and also did the master cylinder so still should be fresh in my mind. not so much clutter it's just me knowing it's still there and doing nothing. thanks much.

Hi,
Regardless of what tbtr "remembers" the vacuum storage tank won't come out from the bottom.

The tank is too large.. Mine split a couple of years ago on my 72.. What a pain to remove those power brake nuts inside the car.

I pulled the vacuum tank out of my '79 without removing the brake booster. Is it a different size maybe? I don't remember how I pulled it out, it is possible that my steering column was out at the time but I think I pulled it out the bottom when I installed my side pipes.

I don't remember the details, but I did remove my tank and I've never removed the booster as long as I've had the car.

Just leave it in place. You still have vacuum operated 'stuff' in the heater/A/C system, and it would operate best with steady level of vacuum.

{You don't have "vacu-phobia", do you?}

Oh, I'm talking about the charcoal canister on my '79. Maybe the earlier C3s have something different in that spot.
