I forgot I started this thread almost five years ago. I wonder why it didn't show up in my search? Anywho, got my '74 painted, up and running. Time to do the brakes/suspension and play with some wheel/tire combos.

I'm not holding my breath. It took 5 years to pick 15" wheels.

Any reason not to use YJ8s or N90 wheels? They are what Zora put on his retirement 74, 2 years before GM could sell them with new C3s.

Just don't do wire wheels, unless you have automotive-grade pesticide.

Nothing against the YJ8s, I just think they look better on stock 'Vettes, especially '78-up models. Mine has some minor body mods, custom paint, side pipes, will be lowered, etc. and I'm going for an earlier hot rod type look, with big and littles.

P.S. Engineering T/A 1 wheels. All are 15 X 8.5 with 4.25 inch backspacing. Tires are Avon CR6ZZ. Rear are 275/55/15 and front are 245/60/15. I made the Goodyear stencils myself. Probably going to have the rear wheels widened to 9.75 with 5.5 inch backspace and try to get a 295/50/15 Avon on the rear next time I need tires.

These two places are where I have gotten them. They aren’t cheap, but are very sticky, V rated and D.O.T. legal and look right on these cars in my opinion of course.

Yes! These wire wheels need a regular spray of of DOT 3. And, don’t forget to rinse with water. Then dry with a leaf-blower. Then....drive really fast to make sure they are 1,000,000% dry.

Love the wire wheel look.
Makes a C3 look like a REAL sports car.

Just put 200 miles on the new tires, they ride lots better than the HP 4000 Hercules i had.
275/60/15 in back
255/60/15 up front.

Personally, I think it’s hard to beat the old school 15” wheels from back in the day. One of my personal faves are the Cragars SS, but I am kind of biased.
I do understand that it is near impossible to find good performance tires in the 15” flavor, so I’d consider larger tires on my 74. Heck, I even have a set of 18/19 C6 Gumby’s I’ve been toying around with the idea of powder coating matte black for my yellow car. IF I ever drop the cragars, I’ll probably go that route….but my heart still skips a beat for the nostalgic chrome mags with wide sidewalled and raised white letter tires.

Either way, my current tires are 265 50 15 Hercules, but are in VERY bad shape awaiting a new set of rubber. No rush, as she is currently torn apart for partial restoration.
Im using 1/2” spacers up front due to needing added space between the calipers and the wheels, and 2” hubcentric adapters in the back to help the rear tires poke out of the fender.
I’m replacing the front springs as part of my resto project, and will cut 1” off the springs to lower the front just a tad.

Cragar also made a polished aluminum slot back in the day.
I had a set mounted on the original BFG Radial T/As...
