The speeding didn't kill them, the crash didn't even kill Walker, he burned to death. Poor judgment/overconfidence was the real cause and nine year old tires didn't help.
George, as i said in post #47 that you quoted, i have been to Spain dozens of times over the years, it's only just over an hours flight for me.
However, your description of very high speed driving over there is not something i recognise, the fines for speeding are very high so it is not done too often.
From what I understand the Spanish car scrapyards are full with late model 'totaled' cars that have come from nasty fatal accidents on all the nice new motorways funded by the EEC. Real car 'enthusiasts' choose to drive elsewhere seemingly.
I can sorta say i lucked out one night, I was doing 110 in a 35 zone, the city cop going the other way turned around really quick and he may have got a little mad when he had to chase after me a few miles, I was losing him but my friend convinced me they have radios and I had better stop.
Well he didn't go to jail but I did, booked only for failure to stop for "blue lights", no speeding, or OVI.... I was in the Navy at the time and my Chief was at the bond hearing, he was pissed, but I made bail a couple days later and made it to duty on time.

Perhaps you could make the case if they were driving within the speed limit they would be alive today.
Just sayin...
I have driven well over the speed limit and made mistakes many many times. I have mostly learned my lesson.
I am lucky to be alive; to never had a bad accident.
Our cars are tempting. I am certainly not a high speed trained driver.
I guess I would ask, would you advise your son or daughter to drive at these speeds?
Just my 2 cents. Not meant to offend anyone.
Heck, in CA all the blinkers are broken anyways...

I when in Spainia have seen the aftermath of what is left of something that is spread for a 100's of meters and wheels and the engine block is out in the field off the road and the guard rails are wiped out for a long way.
You see these cars like they are straight off the race track. Like the winged Porsche's that blow fire out the exhaust when they let off through the turns.
I drove down from Austria to Rome last year on A10 all good fun.

They didn't hurt anyone but themselves, no other drivers, pedestrians, or kittens. Your same logic can be applied to motorcycle helmets and seatbelts, "if they had only been wearing them they would be alive", if you call that living, lol. Alcohol is at the root of the vast majority of fatal crashes.

I've never been to Spain, but I kinda like the music......
There is a tremendous amount of truth to this. There are many different situations and places where 140 MPH can be done relatively safely. And there are situations and places where you're just plain dumb to exceed 60 MPH.
"Experience" is living long enough to recognize the difference.
Why do you think SCCA has strict pre-race inspections? The only place a car can be driven at 140MPH with "relative safety" is on a road course in a fully prepared car with rollcage, harness, helmet, fire suit and medical crew on the stand-by. To think otherwise is just plain old foolishness.
[QUOTE=jnb5101;1592023653]Why do you think SCCA has strict pre-race inspections?
Because of the rules. No tech inspection required on the road and I don't think anyone said they were racing on the road, except I think the Silver State Classic was mentioned. Even that is a race against the clock, you aren't competing directly with another car. That would be street racing and I don't think anyone has said they condone that, just speeding safely.

i am with you this is not a race or going into a turn, narrow highway. mine is a four lane empy straight road.bring her up to 140mph then take foot off pedal and allow to slow down on a car that i personally built the suspension-----------------no guess work!!!!!!!

When I did the Silver State in 1993 the fastest You could run a car with stock seat belts was 115 MPH. To run the 140 class I needed a Snell rated Helmet, Fire Suit, 6 point harness , Halon Fire system. At Tech inspection they lifted the car and checked wheel bearings. And all the manufacturing dates on the safety gear. Anything faster than that needed specific Roll Bars. I have no doubt the rules have got more strict since. I don't think anybody is running 140 with out a cage anymore.

Exactly. Races have rules decided by the sanctioning body. If, however, you're not in a race and simply want to test you and your cars limits, the safety prep of the car is all up to you, with no nanny to watch over you. Find a straight strip of lonely road and have at it.
