1969 windshield washers
Two questions,
1.
Last minute problem, When I select the wipers on, I get the washers as well. I removed the blue and yellow plug that I thought drove the washers on the back of the wiper motor but still the washers continue pumping.
I have installed a new relay under console, new wiper switch, new wiper motor and new washer pump. Wipers park, operate in slow and fast speed as they should. They just will not stop washing, even when I remove the blue and yellow plug.
any ideas??
2.
Could it possible be my wiper switch, it is brand new but doesn't operate very smoothly. What should I use to lubricate it, I have sprayed in electrical connector spray. Would WD40 or white lithium grease help? I find it hard to believe how terrible this replacement switch is.
again any ideas?
Thanks, Pete
plug disconnected but wipers still running
nearly ready for plates
Disconnecting the blue/yellow connectors SHOULD stop the washer pump.
If it doesn't that indicates someone has played with the wiring for the motor/pump.
From the photo it appears the wiper motor/washer pump is a combination of new and old parts.
Is it something you've put together or was it done by someone who worked on your car prior to you?
Regards,
Alan
I believe this is a typical configuration for a 69 motor/pump. Note the washer connectors are separate and slip into individual barrel connectors on the pump. Has your harness been changed? (part of the thin plastic cover has been cut off that's why the connections are exposed.)

Yes, at this stage I wasn't going to worry about the headlight washer drip valve. (As they say I have bigger fish to fry at this point) I will try to find the dialectic grease as you suggested.
Alan, Thanks for the picture. I am pretty sure the yellow and dark blue wire connector has not been tampered with but I will follow it all the way back to the dash just to make sure. (my shop manual shows that the washer wires are supposed to be yellow and dark blue as they are, not the black in that picture you have) The blue/yellow plug does fit easily into the connector housing on the motor just below it in the picture leading me to believe that it is a correct set up. My car is an early build 69 (DEC/68) so maybe that is the difference.
I put everything together myself but the motor and the washer pump are from two different vendors. (they were both supposed to be for a 1969).
Maybe my washer squirt mechanism is simply stuck and will not release so I will take the cap off and investigate, it makes no sense that it pumps without the plug/connector being connected.
I will also check ground and power on blue and yellow wires.
Thanks so much Alan!!
Anyone have an original 1969 pump/washer/drip valve that is operational? i thought I was doing the right thing buying new but experience is telling my that this is not always the correct course of action!
Cheers, Pete in Vancouver
Yes, I agree that the pump wires are blue and yellow.
I think the motor/pump in the picture may have been in a car that had it's engine compartment 'detailed' with some black paint… thus their appearance. I posted it mainly to show the general configuration.
This is a later motor/pump but shows what I believe is the typical blue/yellow wire configuration and black plastic cover.

Alan
I removed the motor and the cover. The wiring is sending the right signal at the right time so I have isolated it to the motor/pump. I ran it with the cover off and it just keeps pumping when wiper motor runs. I can't quite understand how this thing is meant to work and how the solenoid when energized it supposed to activate the pump mechanism.
Maybe these two items are just not compatible but I hesitate to buy more parts as I just don't quite understand how it is intended to work. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Pete
I'm really poor with things electrical! So I can't be of much, if any, help.
I do see that the blue/yellow connection on the pump isn't what I'd expect to see on a 69 motor/pump.
Are you saying the blue/yellow wires in your picture actually run through the firewall to the interior?
If so that's not typical. The blue/yellow wires in the compartment are part of the engine harness and run to the harness connections at the fuse box where the meet their counterpart on the other side of the firewall that are part of the dash harness.

Alan
Ernie from Willcox is REALLY good at this wiper/washer business…. I wish he would join in!
