Default Yeah yeah... another side pipe thread...

I have a 68 427 car that has been fitted with factory replacement 69 style side exhaust. It looks awesome... but... it sounds like a truck. Even after a change to a nice solid lifter cam, it still doesn't sound like a performance car. It sounds like... a truck.

Is there a muffler alternative that will fit under the stock covers, be less restrictive, and not be so loud as to destroy my ear drums? And would a more free flowing muffler get rid of some of the under hood heat?

As a reference, this is what I have in mind that I would like it to sound like:

Hi mc,
The mid year side exhaust system was quite different than the 69 system.
The mid year system is constructed from "chambered pipe" while the 69 system is a muffler and pipe.
I believe at least one of the exhaust manufacturers, (Allen's ?), makes a "chambered pipe" system to fit under the 69 insulators and shields.
Might that give you the sound you're looking for?
Regards,
Alan

I installed a set of the Allen chambered sided exhaust pipes attached to a set of Hedman shorty headers with a ball & socket connection on my '69 base 350 coupe. These were the Allen aluminum pipes that went for $495. I actually got the pipes off a Craigslist seller so I didn't get any documentation with them (they were new). I have a set of original GM over-the-counter 69 side pipe covers installed with these pipes and they fit pretty well together. Here's a link to the Allen Exhaust home page: http://allencorvetteexhaustsystems.com/ . Allen has big block pipes listed. The chambered pipes give my '69 a mid-year sound without the loudness of the '69 pipes. You can hear the radio or have a conversation while driving the Corvette but people can still "hear you coming or starting up". Here's a couple of pics of the pipes before/after the covers were added.
