Default Chambered, Side Exhaust Question

Hello,

I was wondering if 2-1/2" chambered side pipes will fit properly under '69 factory covers and insulators or, since the original exhaust size was 2" (even for big blocks), is that as big as will fit?

Thanks,
-Doug

Hi Doug,
Several of the exhaust manufacturers make chambered side exhaust in the 69 style.
You might want to check to be certain that what you select is made with the rectangular outlets that was typical for 69 and not the round outlets that was typical for mid-year side exhaust.
Regards,
Alan

Check this out.

When you get to the site. 'Click' on 'EXHAUSTS' on the left side of the front page.

THEN...across the top in the light blue area...'click' on 'side pipes'

I think mine are 2.5" when I measuered a while ago but I have no idea where they came from, they appear to be under factory 69 covers but I am just learning about this stuff

Thanks for the info gentlemen,

I was considering getting a set of 2-1/2" chambered mufflers from Classic;
http://www.classicchambered.com/clas...html#corvettes
but I'm not sure if the diameter would be too large for factory covers. Now, with DUB's recommendation, I have another option to consider. Being able to use factory covers is a must for me since the car originally came with side exhaust but it was long gone by the time I got it.

Here is a thread that cover the info you are looking for. With pics.

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...t-upgrade.html

They say in the thread above that 3.5" OD is the biggest pipe that will fit under the 69 Vette factory cover and one guy has pics of his C3 with 3.5 OD side muffler....

Classic Chambered says on their site that 3" is the largest... Both Classic Chambered and Allens offer pipes that will fit.

Hi Doug,
I have a 69 SB with factory side exhaust. In 2013 I added Hedman ceramic coated headers made for the side exhaust setup and Allen's chambered pipes. They fit extremely well under the factory covers. My only problem was the square tip used on the 69. Allen's had welded them on at the wrong angle. I sent them photos and of the problem and quite frankly they blew me off. Rather than making an issue I cut them off and re-welded them back on at the correct angle. It is important that the square tip be squared with the exit hole in the cover and be flush or slightly extend just beyond the edge of the chrome. If not the hot exhaust exiting the tip can be very hard on the chrome finish.
all the best,
Norm

From customers telling me, 3" diameter is the largest that will fit under a stock C-3 cover. (in a round tube or chambered muffler that is, vs. the factory small profile oval one)
