Hi t,
The VIN was stamped in 2 places along the top of the left side frame rail.
The first is just about where the driver's left hip is when he's sitting in the car. It can't be seen with the body in place on the chassis.
The second is just forward of the #4 body mount. It can often be located by feeling for the slight depression in the rail the hydraulic stamping machine made. The stamp can often be seen using a small mirror.

Alan
This is an unusual car. Came out of a chop shop that was uncovered by the police back in the 80's. Front and rear has been changed to 80 components as well as the whole interior including the dash and both doors. I bought without the engine so not original there. It is a 4 speed car so will check for vin no. there also. Winshield pillar vin tag is gone. Where might one be on the rear end. This car has been retitled by the state. It does have a good title. Will never be worth big bucks but will be a very nice daily driver. I bought it from a friend where it had been in a barn for 26 years. Just would like to find some vin numbers on the car. I tried looking for the one on top of the frame by no. 4 mount but didn't see anything. Might have been a little to far forward. I was looking right above the shock bracket. Thanks Larry
Hi t,
The area of the shock bracket is typically several inches too far forward for the stamp.
You can see the depression made by the stamping tool that I described in
K's photo.

Thanks everyone. The pics give me a good idea where to look. Monday morning I'll give it another go. Thanks Larry

Good luck, I was in the same boat with my 71, and never have found an original VIN anywhere. I have had the frame off the car and stripped down, but never found even grinder marks to indicate there was one on there. All I have is the CA-DMV issued serial number.
Where would it be on either the 4 speed or the rear end if all else fails. Thinking transmission might be original to the car and pretty sure rear end is.
Being that it's legal and isn't the way it came from the factory I wouldn't waste my time authenticating something that can't be authenticated. Enjoy your car and think of all the cool things you can do to it.
The rear end won't have the vin, only frame, body, engine and trans had it. The rear end should have stamping on the bottom at the cover for date code and ratio code.

It's just a curiousity thing I guess. Just would like to know if at all possible. Already done a lot, built up an engine. new brakes, new paint, new carpet, new tires, redone the interior, put a set of true duals on but just ordered side pipes. Just wanted to try the side pipes for a change. Just finishing up putting new rear wheel bearings in. Come spring car should be good to go. I would post before and after pics if I knew how.

Im in the same boat. My car has a 72 VIN on a 82 everything. I stopped looking. I dint want to peel back the legal onion too far. Its registered, legally, in NY, as a 72.....Its tough explaining to people, but Ive grown accustomed to it. My conversation usually goes like...'yeah, its registered as a 72 but has a 82 body and a crate 468 and seats from a Z06 and................'
Just turn wrenches and drive it bud. It will drive you crazy looking for every VIN.
Hi tl,
The transmission was stamped with the vin derivative at the same time the engine block pad was stamped using the same stamp.
On 4-speed transmissions the stamp is on the REAR flange of the RIGHT side of the main case.
In addition to the vin derivative there is a second stamp at that location that identifies the transmission and when/where it was assembled.

This photo shows the area with the exhaust pipe removed which makes it a bit easier to see.
A 1975 model year Corvette would have come with Borg-Warner ST-10,
and the VIN was stamped on the machined surface rear of the side cover, by the build date...
