Newbie here to this site. I would like to experiment with a hydroboost, does anyone have a manufacturer part number ? i do not want to pay $400.00 for a pump if i can by one for 200.00. I have all the high pressure lines, able to fabricate anything. I think there is a popular mode. Also anyone try the Rack and Pinion conversion ?
Winter 01-02 my '72 vert underwent the rack conversion....a CTO rack from a '89 grand am......custom tie rods, keeping the stock ends....so machine shop adapter and then input steering is made up of junkyard mix/match parts and has just two universal joints....the rack mounts are fairly obvious when setting the rack on jackstands and sliding around under the car on higher stands, mine were welded up by a buddy, and it took two attempts to get the driver side correct.....
as for HB, it's a basic plug in swap, nothing fancy really....
PM me if you need help, as I may miss this thread.....I know I had diagrams on this site about the swap....rack mounts....
Get one from an astro van at the wrecking yard, just look it over and make sure it's not leaking. You cut the eye off the pedal rod and then thread it 3/8 24. I used one off a 92 3/4 ton GMC, but the rod diameter is not as good. The mounting plate from the truck is better, the one from the van is angled. When you get the vacuum booster removed, kind of a pain, take the studs from the hydro-boost mount plate and put them from the inside of the car facing the engine, removing the unit is easy from then on.
As for steering, since you can fab, use a 2000 Jeep grand Cherokee power steering box, It's the one borgeson starts with. There are plans for adapter brackets to bolt it to the frame in place of the stock box. This one has integral power, no assis cylinder or extra hoses under the car.
****EDIT*** I was typing this and the previous post '75 beat me to it.
Sorry no help here on a part number on the unit itself. All I have are the kit part numbers that you do not want.
I have seen threads here on the forum where someone did use a HB from a Chevy truck or whatever and made it work. Do a search here on the forum or hopefully someone who has done this will respond with the number you are looking for.
