I'm looking at the MSD Pro-Billet Tach Drive Distributor 8572 for my 73, 454. I'll be going through the motor soon, stroking it to 496, heads and other mods. Are any of you running this distributor? What do you think? Have you had any problems?
The 8572 is a excellent choice for a distributor. If you are going to run a billet camshaft, you need the bronze gear on the dist. Are you going to use the 6AL box also? T

I've used that system on many engines I've built, and it's a good setup. Nice quality, good adjustability of the advance curve, and good reliability.
Thanks guys, its always nice to get feed back on a good product before I reach for my wallet.
I've run MSD on cars and boats in the past and they always served me well.
Yes, I do plan to run with the 6AL box as they recommend.
Are you guys running the vacuum or machanical advance?

Mech and vac on a street car. If it's drag race only you can get away with just mech.
I've got one too. No problems at all. I'm even running the original K-66 TI box and coil with it.
And if you haven't got the cam yet, Comp Cams can make one with an iron gear so you can use the normal distributor gear and never worry about it.
I remember it was always best to run the bronze gear on the distributor, because there is always a slight variance in the cut and angle between the cam and distributor gears due to machining and different manufactures. Since the gears are not a perfect mesh, you would want any wear to be on the distributor gear because it is the easier to swap.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I had one on my 66' and it was great.....BUT understand that although they recommend the 6al box......you HAVE to run one as there is no module in this distributor. Why MSD has not made a Ready to Run tach drive unit is beyond me.
Has been all around just fine. I was disappointed that it corroded within the distributor cap. It has always worked and I just cleaned it up. Considering that my old Mallory never rusted at all I was surprised... and this vehicle sits in a garage and a moderate temperature.
I have now locked it out and use it with a FAST EZ-EFI 2.0. I don't even use the tach drive anymore since I got an electric tach about 10 years ago.
If I was to do it again, I would buy a ready to run distributor to begin with and install an electric tach(or convert my tach with one of those cool new kits) at that point. That way I would not have to run an MSD box and I could have gotten rid of that tach cable earlier.

I agree, so I just emailed them and asked why not. When I get their response I'll post it here

Reason: Picture failure
This is what I found when I pulled it out of the engine when it went on a stand. It actually ran really well except the lacking power through town...hence the seized weights up top, heaviest springs and Black advance stop bushing (Not that it mattered at this point)
MSD is not th same company it use to be. Morel has made Ampco45 Bronze distributor gears for years. They will run for many thousands of miles on the street. You buy a cheap bronze gear then yes it will wear out.
