gen warning light
I put together a new gauge cluster assembly and I was wondering
if I would have any problems deleting the gen & low fuel warning lights?
Someone here on the forum said that the alternator needs this light & without it, problems will occur with the charging system?
What gauge should be my fifth?
clock? Trans Temp? (can't get oil temp in this brand of gauges)

My '79 needs that GEN light or the alternator won't charge the battery.

I personally like the low fuel light being operational..it is a nice touch.
As for a gauge....possibly a transmission temp gauge or what has been mentioned..such as a clock, vacuum gauge.

On my 69 it had been a blower car and had a vaccum/ boost gauge which are pretty cool, info i would rather have than trans temp, but with no blower it will just read vacuum side,
I dig low fuel warning so much i bought from a place in England a little module that allows me to have a blinking light even a buzzer, all mad max road warrior

Air / fuel ratio gauge.
If you want an oil temp gauge - find out the resistance of the water temp gauge / sender unit and get a oil temp sender unit from another company that matches your gauge - use the computer to print a oil temp tag paste it over the water and now you have one.

You don't need the charging light but the alternator needs something in that circuit to excite it when the engine is started. You can replace it with a 75 ohm, 5 watt resistor. Or, you could install a 1-wire alternator that doesn't use it.

If anyone has upgraded to a CS130 style alternator, that alternator does care if there is a light in the circuit. If the light is eliminated, a resistor must be added in its place for those alternators to work properly.
All of this is based on information I've read on various forums on the subject.

If you decide to just run 12v to the regulator instead of using the gen light circuit, make sure it comes from the acc circuit and not the ign circuit. The alternator, once excited produces voltage that can keep the ign system powered up and not let the engine turn off with the key. Acc circuit and Ign circuit are not joined with the key off or in start position.

Why not use a Trans Temp gauge, to read engine oil temp?
You'll know what it is indicating...
Good luck... GUSTO
