Default What do adjustable rear strut rods do that factory ones don't

As I am pondering what to do with my rear suspension I see adjustable strut rods for sale. What do these let you do that the factory ones don't?
Do they offer more adjustment? Are they worth it?

Thanks

They stay adjusted. No matter how tight I cranked the factory cam bolt, the left one would loosen and I'd have all kinds of camber.

1. Lets you adjust camber by adjusting the rod length.
2. Mine have eccentrics that move the inner point up and down (vice in and out stock) that allows me to adjust the camber curve (how the camber changes with suspension movement).
3. Stronger.

And if you get the new bracket you can adjust the connection point to match the half shafts angle.

The keeps the geometry the same. Even at full droop the arms match the half shafts.

Hi gw,
"What do these let you do that the factory ones don't?"

IF the rest of the rear suspension remains stock, and the cam adjusters are working, not much beyond easier/precise camber adjustment.

So 'coolness' factor?
Regards,
Alan

everything stated all ready plus if you get competition adjustable strut rods with Heim joint ends, no bushing deflection, even more camber control.....I have the competition ones now for about 10 years....to me I would not use anything else.

That's not a great idea for handling, you do want to retain some camber curve, it would help traction on the drag strip though.

I think they provide more than "coolness factor". It won't matter if the car is never driven, but if you actually drive the car, as some have pointed out, the factory system can allow rear wheel camber to change. The eccentric bolt system sounds okay, but relies on the tightness and torque required to prevent potholes, and other sudden impacts on the tires from changing the camber. You will not have that problem with the adjustable heim rod style. And as JB said, it prevents unnecessary deflection. But as I said, if the car is never going to be driven, don't waste the money. If it is, this is a definite improvement.

I combined the adjustable strut rods with VBandP bracket and eccentric eliminators. The bracket has vertical slots instead of horizontal slots, which allows me two adjustments:
  • The adjustable rods are used to set the static camber.
  • By using the eccentric eliminators I can set the height of the inner pivot, which adjusts the camber curve during suspension travel. I set mine at the top of the slot to provide some camber increase during corners.

VBandP Bracket

Eccentric eliminators that allow adjustment and no possible change in pivot point once set. You could easily make something similar with a drill press, but I believe these are the ones I used (been >10 years ago when I installed them)
