Default Wrong motor mounts

I recently got my motor running real good after some tweeting but noticed when I put my motor mounts in there's way to much play in them the motor shakes too much and I'm not to happy with the mounts .. When I went to the auto parts store the guy said they are the right ones .. And me like a dummy already threw mine out and had nothing to compare too .. I have a 1970 with the 454 it's a march car and I recently read a article that they changed the mounts after a certain month from the 69 to 70 in cars after June of 70 here's the pictures and you tell me

Hi f,
My understanding is that 68-69 cars didn't have the 'safety mount' but 70-72 cars did.
Here's an example of a safety type mount.
Regards,
Alan

I went through this same research myself when looking at motor mount options to buy

IIRC, the stand width is 2 3/8 for non-safety lock mounts and 2 5/8 for 1970+ safety mount (BB) style.

Was your car originally a small block car? If so then just use small block mounts so they fit the stand (or use washers to take up the space).

I guess the question I'm asking is if the 69-70 mounts are the same .. That's what I need to know but I do appreciate the photo

IIRC, 68-69 BB motor mounts were the same as small block so did not have the safety. starting in 1970 the BB motor mounts added the safety so they are wider.

from the pic of your stand either you car was originally a small block (2 3/8) or you car was before the cutover to the newer BB safety style (2 5/8).

You have two choices 1) source small block mounts 2) use washers as spacer for the mounts you have.

Hi,
There are not big block and small block engine mounts.
There were not big block and small block frames.
The same mount was used for bb and sb engines in 68-69 production and then changed and used for 70-72 production.
There IS a difference in the mount used in those 2 periods.
Regards,
Alan

If you car has a 70 frame it needs 70-72 motor motor mounts.

I would rather just buy the right mounts ... The car is a real 454 car so if I got the 69 big block mounts do you think they would work I really don't want to put washers in there

Grab a tape measure and measure the width of the stand and compare to mounts at your local auto parts store. From your pic it looks to be the 2 3/8 width style.

I recently had to change the mounts in my '70 small block (one mount had been too loose at some stage and over time the bolt oval-led the hole in the stand, if you leave yours the way it is you could have the same issue). The replacement locking mounts seem to be all the same to me except for the narrower stands the mount has spacers welded in it.
You would achieve the same thing by adding washers to your existing mounts but if they are the non locking type I would suggest changing the LH one at least to a locking one. JMPO

Hi f,

I don't understand…
there aren't 'big block mounts', sb an bb mounts are the same,
and why wouldn't you buy the 70 mounts. Does your car have a 69 frame?
Regards,
Alan

Alan, they are the same as they bolt to the engine but as I understand it the factory BB mount that has the safety starting in 1970 are wider spaced at the frame stand (the tube the long shear bolt goes through). 2 3/8 vs 2 5/8. His picture supports that. Many aftermarket motor mounts have spacers welded to a common stamping to make up the difference when used with small block/early BB stands.

His 1970 car must have been made before the cutover to the wider stand and thus uses the earlier style 2 3/8 mount.

I've had good luck with Corvette Central's mounts. Here is an article with links to parts: http://tech.corvettecentral.com/2011...148.1499775541
