I think you will need to drop the tank in order to replace that valve. It's held onto the tank with a screw. You'd need to be Houdini to get to it. Luckily dropping the tank is relatively easy.......as long as it isn't full of gas! Grab a mate, it's a 1-hour job at most, once you figure out how to remove the crossmember bolts (through the access holes in the frame on the outer walls).
Indeed Alan, I see from the forum that some people have managed it without dropping the fuel tank so fingers crossed! Nick
Mick,
It is 'do-able'...but it will not be easy. But it is still easier than fighting with your spare tire carrier and having to deal with your exhaust so it does not get in the way..and dropping your fuel tank....in my opinion
Even if you only have to deal with the left muffler area...so you can reach up and get to it....it is what it is.
The hoses are the worst part for me...but I have found if I remove the corbin clamps or tension clamps or whatever someone wants to call them and then cut the hoses off to make things easier. And then obviously put new hoses ones on.
I know this is an old thread, but I have a similar problem with a '71, only it's leaking at what appears to be a vent that is spot-welded to the top of the tank, just to the left of the filler neck? The tank itself seems pretty new...

To the left of the filler neck? There shouldn't be anything there, only bolts holding the filler neck to the tank. Have you checked the filler neck gasket? See the picture for reference.
Hi Primoz, thanks for chiming in. I'm getting fuel from that disk you see in your photo, just to the left of the neck, inside the recessed area. . Seems like it might be some sort of valve?

That is a flat metal valve. Haven't seen it sold as a separate part and only comes with a fuel tank. Does it leak only when the tank is full to the very top?
That's what I'm suspecting. I think he's getting it filled too high. No, I wouldn't dream of trying to replace it; it's welded on. The tank seems fairly new. I'll try calling Quanta again tomorrow to see if I can get someone to help me.
