Trying to recognize my engine
If the block has previously been decked then the stamped numbers will be gone.

1. Does the engine run at this time?
2. If so, does it have any issues regarding like rough idle or missing?
3. Are you happy with the performance?
4. If so, is it worth tearing it apart just to know what is in it or when it was manufactured?
I have the original 454 in my 73.
The prior owner told me that the original owner installed a performance cam, and a forged crank.
My engine runs great, it does not miss or have any issues.
The last thing I would do would be to tear it apart to see what cam was installed or to verify it really has a forged crank.
If you are looking to gain more performance, wait until you're ready to rebuilt to tear the engine apart.
That's just my opinion.

It's just from curiosity...
The engine runs. But it runs only for couple minutes here and there. I didn't really took the car for a ride since it's on resto process..
so for about the performance - I don't know. never checked it :-)
My engine is 350 sbc and I know it's not the original since the last owner told me he swapped it + install bigger cam into it.
I agree that all of it it's not really important but it's a good to know.
At first I wanted to know just so I could order parts for my engine I needed to know it's a 69'-70' engine (if it matters at all) and not 80's engine like the model of the car (car is 1980).
The motor seems like in good condition. It have RTV on the rear seal and on the lower part of the timing chain cover (between the cover and the oil pan) which I don't know the reason for it but there's no leak and I hope it's not a big deal.
My plans are to carry this motor until it will die and then replace it with a new 350 with aluminium heads and healthier intake and cam.
(And if the engine won't die I'm planning to do it anyway in the next 5 years

Some replacement blocks had no number on the pad at all.
