Default C3 Wiper Door

Hi, I am new to the forums and just purchased a 69 C3 427 in Australia.

I have read the many threads/posts regarding the wiper door being stuck and how to fault find and rectify the solution.

I am not planning on driving my car in the rain and the wiper motor is fried, how would I get the door to stay down down? What do I have to disconnect?

The door is currently stuck permanently open.

Plan on sorting the problem once I get around to installing a new wiper motor.

Thanks

There are two vacuum lines on the canister that opens and closes the wiper door. If you pull both lines and plug them, the door will stay in any position you want.

The canister is just above the passenger side valve cover on the firewall.
In the picture of my 71 it's right behind the air cleaner.
You can pull / push the rood on the canister by hand if you bull the rubber boot back. ( after you pull the vacuum lines).

I would swap the lines and the door may stay closed. you never know.

Hi NJA,
Welcome!
First Post!!
The 'de-fault' position for the wiper door is 'open'.
If you remove the rubber plug from the front of the vacuum actuator for the wiper door you'll be able to push the door closed with your hands.... if the linkage isn't jammed. The door moves toward the windshield as it closes so push rearward and downward.
Then pull the 2 hoses off the actuator and join them with a small plastic/nylon connector. Doing this will bypass the actuator and also stop the constant vacuum leak that will occur if don't join them.

You might consider getting some trouble shooting info for the wipers and the wiper door operation. It's pretty nice to have them working properly.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

The round plug that needs to be removed and one of the 2 hoses (red stripe) that need to be removed. The second (green stripe) is connected to a nipple on the rear of the actuator.

I ended up pressing the wiper button and the wipers started working and then stopped in the upward position. I can see the spring switch that the passenger wiper contacts has deteriorated and has only 2 lines going into it.

Worse is the car now wont start. There is voltage in the battery and power windows etc work but the engine wont turn over.

Is there a fuse or something that has blown?

Hi NJA,
Pushing the wiper **** 'in' starts the washer function of the wiper pump that is part of the wiper motor.
If the pump is operating you will hear it even if no washer fluid is being dispensed.
Pushing that **** also starts the wipers sweep.

The switch you see in the wiper bay is the 3 Port Interlock Switch. It's purpose is to signal the wiper relay that the wipers have been shut off and reached to 'park' position so the wiper door may be closed without hitting the wiper arms.

There are several electrical 'fusible' links in the engine harness... one at the hon relay on the left side apron, one at the rear of the engine near the distributor/wiper motor and one at the starter.
Do you know what they look like and how to locate them?

Regards,
Alan

HI Alan,

Thanks for all the help, so far I have only been able to drive my corvette home after purchase and haven't been able to enjoy it yet. my luck!

I have had a look at the fusible links and all seems ok (I have attached pictures).

I did notice near the horn relay a solenoid that appears to be missing an input and a electrical cable that appears to have worn through. See pictures. I am not sure what this is.

Fusible link near wiper
fusible link horn relay
unplugged electrical cable
solenoid without input, presumably from the unplugged cable
fusible link at starter motor

NJA,
I'm sorry to hear that you've had some 'issues' with your new to you car.

The wire and connector in your photo is intended for the switch on the brake fluid distribution block shown in the next photo.
But, having that not connected WON'T prevent you from starting your car.

Are you remembering to fully depress the clutch when you start the car?
There's a switch on the clutch pedal that needs to be cycled in order for the ignition to function.

Maybe you've forgotten that?
Regards,
Alan

Thanks Alan, classic rookie error on my part, I did not depress the clutch when starting!! I have always just left a car in neutral and started it without the clutch.

In terms of the wipers being stuck in the upward position, would that be the 25A fuse do you think?

Do you have ...preferably a voltmeter.? If not...do you have test light???

I assume your wiper door is all the way UP???

Does your wiper motor have red wire that comes out the side of it that faces your brake master cylinder??? WITH oyu nigntion key ON buteh car ddiesnot nee dto be running. Chcekc to see if thatw ire has 12 volts.

Then...the connector at the front of the wiper motor that has three wires all in a row. Check the CENTER one..and it should be YELLOW and see if it has 12 volts on it when your ignition is ON.

Then check to see if your actual housing of your wiper motor is grounded.

Need the answers to these questions to help you further....OR...you can go on Willcox Corvette web site and see the process of 'bench testing' your wiper motor and you can get it to go back down WITHOUT using your cars current circuits. All you would need is some wire and possible clips.
