I am very curious: Are you running an MSD ignition?
I had an issue where every time I turned my high beams on, my car would miss a beat. It turned out that I didn't have a full 12 volts going to the coil and it wrecked havoc with the spark delivery. It eventually burned out my coil and left me stranded.
hey Dub, my 76 has the large ground ring, and it has the metal plate.
That is new to me. Unless someone spliced it in. Not doubting you but your car would be the first one.
I have yet to see the large round ring to ground the cigarette lighter on a Corvette with the metal shifter plate. The ground was attached to the AC/heater control head like I previously mentioned.
I guess all that matters is that the area is grounded and how that is done is just semantics. Not like that area is ever going to be torn apart and judged.
your lighter and ignition are on the same circuit,
without proper lighter ground, it seeks alternate gnd. path.
which in this case is thru your Distributer and or heater blower.
ground lighter properly problem should go away.
I would review your complete gnd. system, sounds like you are missing a gnd.

I know it has it, because, the first time I had the shifter plate off, I could not figure how to take apart the lighter, so I just cut the wire at the lighter. I then called Electric Limited and they were kind enough to send me a new ring, I put it back together like it came from the factory, now my 76 is an early build.
