So I'm in the middle of getting the engine bay put back together and I'm thinking the original alternator that my dad ran won't work with the new setup. The one I pulled was a Delco Remy 1100543 42amp. I'm guessing that won't be sufficient anymore.
I just got the engine back from the builder, here's a quick rundown.
The CS-144 is an excellent choice as it is capable of delivering more power at lower RPM than most. A lot of the mega-amp alts available only deliver at a higher RPM and usually you need the power at idle or low cruise when the fans are on rather than the highway when you're getting airflow.
The cs-144 is a larger size than the 10/12 si but can be made to work
I'm also thinking of getting a new alternator. Is the CS-144 a direct replacement? Besides upgrading the wire with beefier ones, anything else needed?
I'm looking for a replacement that doesn't need any additional changes.
This is my big concern as well. I don't want to have to do a huge amount of changes to get it to fit. My big concern is fitting a larger alternator onto the engine that has to use extra tall valve covers or a set of cheater valve covers and spacers to clear the stud girdles.

I've since moved mine to the passenger side for various reasons but extending the bracket was straight forward.

This definitely appears to be the popular choice. Fitment with tall valve covers is a big concern. Also modifying the bracket is not ideal since I don't have welding experience. Would your modified bracket happen to be laying around since you moved the alternator?
I used a Powermaster CS130D, part # 8207. Same dimensions as a stock SI. All you need is an adapter harness, and upgrade the output wire.
Switch pulleys with your old one, and it bolts right up.
95 amperes at idle.
The earlier CS130 seemed to be hit/miss on reliability especially when pushed to higher outputs
I haven't tried the CS130D but would expect they've got it worked out by now

I was looking at that setup as well. I wasn't sure if the 115 amp would be sufficient or not with my setup...
A 17SI has a output of 108 amps, and rund dual spals on my vette with no problem, even with a/c on high speed in FLORIDA.....been on there for some 20 years with one exchange not related to anything rong with the unit, inherently .....
I put a CS144 on a old Chevy motor home/van project, fit right in place, using the stock 350 engine drives....up top on pass side....
