Hello. I am removing my speedometer in my 1970 coupe so I can send it out to be repaired (Odometer stopped working). I would also like to replace the cable (as the needle bounces) Does anyone have detailed instructions on removal?
I already loosened up the drivers side dash pad and the 2 bolts to allow the steering column to move a bit. It doesn't drop down much? Do I have to take out the steering column?
I can slide the console towards me a couple inches, but things still seem a little tight. Can anyone tell me the best way to get to the back of the speedometer?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Happy New Year from New York!

https://www.zip-corvette.com/blog/co...1977-corvette/ Look out for this tab with 2 rivets "WRAP IT/TAPE IT WITH CARDBOARD OR FOAM" It will cut you like a knife ! On the back of each is a spring clipper the cable connection "press in to release" Remember to photograph every thing you remove/steps. Mark/tag all wiring.

Hello. Thank you for the information. I disconnected both Speedo & Tach Cables. I also saw that the thick wiring harness was clipped behind each Tach & Speedo. I removed vacuum hoses that were connected to the lights.
Is there anything else that will prevent it from sliding forward & out? I think I have to remove the odometer reset cable as it is blocking some wires.

John- several other forum members gave you some good info. You will find that working behind the dash is a miserable job. I had mine out to replace all of the gauges and to install a new wiring harness. I hope I never have to do it again. Take photos and make a lot of notes and label wires and tubing if you remove them. Also note where the thick bundle of wires in the harness goes- above or below the speedo cable and tach cable. If you get that wrong, the dash panel will not go back far enough to fasten the screws that hold it in place. You will probably learn some new swear words by the time you are done.
Consider rewiring all of the illumination lamps to a common connecting block while you are in there and if any of the lamp holders are not a tight fit replace these also. This can save a lot of frustration when you have just wiggled the panel back in place only to find one or more of the lamps have become dislodged. Compared to other cars I have worked on that were much older than my '70 the whole shebang in the vette reminds me of something from the '50's or earlier. I do really like the instrument layout though, way nicer than the strip speedometers and the like fitted to a lot of cars from the same era.
