71 dash lights always on
On my 71 the dash lights were always on.
I bought a new headlight switch, thinking the rheostat was bad.
Install the new switch and the instrument lights still are on all the time. Turn the **** and lights do not change

Are you sure that the **** is able to be pushed in all the way as designed??? I have seen the bezel break and cause for the **** not be be able to go in all the way unless you messed with it.
If you disconnect the headlight switch connector...do the lights go off. If they do...then either the switch is messed up internally...or someone has put a wire in the connector for the dash light in the wrong terminal port..
Simple to figure out. The RED wire is your power IN supply....and the DARK GREEN wire is the wire for your dash gauge lights., SO...if you have the switch put and use an ohmmeter...IF the switch is turned OFF...you should not get any ohms when you touch the terminal for the RED wire and the DARK GREEN wire.....simple as that.
