Default 74 L82 best carb replacement

My new to me, 74 L82 has the Rochester quadrajet carb. It hasn’t been driven much at all in the last few years. Mostly in storage. The stock carb is rusting on the bottom. Which carb- manifold would be the best replacement. The motor was rebuild -stock- years ago and has long tube headers. Car was totally restored and is in beautiful shape except for the carb. Ideas? Thanks. Tom

Sorta the same advice. A Quadrajet is almost certainly the best carb for your car, unless you want to jump to EFI or have a specific race application.

Lars (post 2) is still your best bet.

While Lars is rebuilding your carb (he can also help you find a replacement core, if that turns out to be what you need, but I bet he'll still want what you have), you could replace your intake manifold with an aluminum one, save a bit of weight, and improve breathing. There are lots of threads, and opinions, on the best intake manifold replacement.

But start with emailing Lars. Ask for his timing papers while you are at it, and tune up your car before you pull the carb off.

Lars for the Qjet^^^^^^

Otherwise, the Holley 4175 650 CFM vacuum secondary Qjet spreadbore replacement new from Holley for $500. I have had my 4175 on my 78 L-82 4 speed since 1985....great carb and direct replacement if you go new. I have rebuilt myself the 4175 2X in 30 years easily........

Keep the OEM Qjet and have LARS do his magic......my 2 cents! since it is OEM to the L-82

The base is aluminum - it can't rust...

I once rebuilt the Q-Jet salvaged off the Titanic.

After cleanup and rebuild:

Contacted Lars. Thanks for the info. Mechanic said rust had built up in the base of carb bowl. Will drain everything and get the carb to Lars for rebuild.

I'm glad it worked out for you OP!

Lars stated that the Q-Jet was recovered from the Titanic, which sank in 1912, though the plastic fast-idle cam dates parts of it to 68-69, so perhaps it was first sent to a shoddy rebuilder for the franken-carb treatment before Lars rescued it and rebuilt a 1912 core with some later parts.

Or perhaps someone swapped an SBC into this German U-boat. We really need that sarcasm tag.

Ya im thinking the last thing highly remembered dissasters of last century 1906 san francisco earth quake, 1912 sinking loss of life on titanic. Then ww1, ww2, korea, vietnam more dissasters unless you think war not a dissaster, im thinking never been a good one. My guess lars fixed some fire exposed san francisco QJets that were not totaly completely melted. He wont admit to it that he designed the QJ.

You guys are onto me... The very first Q-Jets made (for race chariots for the Romans) were actually made from clay. The Q-Jets I installed on the Titanic were originally cast iron, which is why the bowls cracked when the iceberg was struck. I switched to aluminum just prior to WWII, and stopped selling Q-Jets for use on the Mitsubishi A6M5 (Zero) after the Germans attacked Pearl Harbor. The Q-Jets I built for the Minuteman ICBM Missiles and for the Space Shuttle were all made from Titanium, but those used in support of the US Automotive Industry were all zinc die castings. The Q-Jets used by NASA on the Mars Rovers were standard zinc die cast automotive models, but were 800 cfm to cope with the thin Martian atmosphere. Specially calibrated in the thin air of Denver, since conditions here are identical to Mars. And now you know the REAL story.

I knew damn well you designed it would not admit to it put of showing your age. VP pence said we are going back to moon by 2024. Seems like waste of our money ( our government would never do that 21 trillion in debt ) we have been to moon twice nothing to prove. But then when i complained i was told its a known fact that the moon is hollow and alliens have bases on the moon keep there stuff inside and only come out into view when moon is on the dark side. This is known fact because late night talk show hosts say it is so.

When I came back after my 2nd alien abduction, I was missing my boxer shorts, and two of my "specially calibrated" QuadraJets were gone. They're not abducting people with Holleys - they want the Q-Jets. Just sayin'...

huum the boxer shorts gone worrysome, what the hell you do abducted by fruit loop alliens. Im in luck then only have holleys, dont know what to do with QJ anyway. They had to take bruce jenner off his old box of wheaties and install his likeness on front of fruit loops cerreal box. Woman put that on face book about jenner, i like to repeat it. I guess i should be politicaly correct, its katlyn fruit loops now.

Back on the topic:
Tom is sending his carb out to me for evaluation and rebuild. I'll post up a new thread, with a link from this thread, once I receive the carb so everyone can follow along on the carb that "a mechanic" stated needed to be replaced. This is a common situation, and it's a shame that new enthusiasts to this hobby have a hard time getting good advice and services to keep these cars running right. We're going to get Tom set up nicely with a perfect, original carb.
