I have had some major paint damage after hail. Any advice if this can be recovered without a complete paint job? I need to be prepared for insurance issues...
thx for your help....1969, yellow (not original paint). Just need to know if she can be "patched up".....
Yellow's a particularly tough color to match. I've had some luck with Dr. Color Chip on a dark gray car and I've been able to hide a blemish on my silver car since I had the original paint. If the car is clear coated that is nearly impossible to blend. Any respectable body shop is going to want to do a full panel repair. If this is an insurance job I would absolutely hold out for that as a minimum.
Finally, there is a paint/body section under General Corvette topics if you intend to fix it yourself.
It is a solid-color paint. That makes it easier to match (than a metallic paint). You can get 'close' to the right paint color with a "color camera" (most pro auto paint stores have one); but final matching must be done by a paint pro. Otherwise, the touch-up paint will be readily visible and different than the existing paint. Trust me...those color cameras only get it to within 2-3% accuracy. With yellow, that's quite a bit different.
If you find a good matching touch-up paint, you can do a decent job of filling those damaged areas and getting it to look OK (10 foot observer might not see them). A real expert to make them nearly invisible. But there is technique and some skill required to do a good job.
My suggestion is to get some quotes from GOOD paint shops in your local area (as stated by car folks who have seen several examples of their work) for just filling and finishing the damaged areas. Also have them give you a quote for a complete re-paint of the same color. You make the choice. If it were me, I would have a pro fix what you have (based on the photos in your post).
