Here are my custom hood vents. I designed them and had a local metal working shop, water jet them out. I tried to go with a 70's factory vibe to the look. They are fastened with 3M body fastener strips. They sure help to evacuate the heat when sitting still, because basically, the C3 engine compartment is a sealed box. Not sure how they work moving, but I've never overheated either.(electric fans and alum. radiator). I have the exact measurements of the hood pieces and pics of the install as well.
I'm considering this since I happen to have one laying around. It's from a Shelby Charger.
I have one more on the way. To be clear, I'm thinking about two of these, side by side.
A Dodge Shelby piece- Really!!!
I actually have a pair of these and think that they fit the design of the C3 hood- off a Kia Stinger
You turn them around swap sides- a would work great to remove air-
This is what I did to my stock hood. A ZR1 style plexiglass window and two screen vents. I used yarn tufts to show air flowing out of theses vents at speed. The underhood temp dropped, but the biggest surprise improvement was the high speed handling response. The front end was floating at illegal speeds and the vents eliminated that. The car was much more responsive at speed.
Well they list it for the L88 hood so it probably is designed for that only.It would be cool if they made one for the stock hood
I think they made a slightly shorty version for regular C3 hoods.... but I can no longer find it on their site.
I kinda' like the Trackspec piece and would consider one for my '73...once I get all the other "to do list" items completed (probably never) at this rate.
So many good ideas proposed here,,, but what really works best when stopped or only rolling 10MPH
Anything that forces outside air through the radiator, while letting heated post-radiator air out of the engine compartment will help.
So, make sure your chin spoiler is in place, and your seals are in place around the radiator. After that, any vent that is on the flat part of the hood, aft of the radiator foam, will help with a car in stop and go traffic, as well as any improvements you can make to the stock fan.
If you are in a parade, for example, you could leave the rear of the hood up, and not latched. This will let your fan blow air out of the engine compartment. Just don't do this on the highway, as it will let air back into the engine compartment, and reduce the efficiency of your cooling.
I inserted Ford Mustang hood vents they fitted quite well and you can buy after market fiberglass one quite cheep. They look quite tidy from the inside as well.
Are there any hood vents that are a little more daily driver friendly as far as rain goes? I like the more hidden looking c7 vent on the l88 hood is nice. I did notice my car runs much cooler with the hood up vs down and idling.
The side vents beejay has at least wouldn't put water on top the engine.
Not sure that driving in rain would hurt a thing unless it was pouring on top of the dist or belts.
Most here wont take them out unless the weather is good, Sunday cruise etc. Have driven wtih no hood at all no problems...short commute to work but still..

..
ever seen what water does in an engine ? look up HYDROLOCK ... it only takes the volume of water equal to the space between piston and head at TDC... IN ONE CYLINDER .... that's not much water in my 10.5 ; 1 compression engine .. and a wet distributer wont run.. { try STEAM CLEANING your distributer and see if it starts} .....Of course if you just have a Sunny Sunday driver or a Trailer Queen, no problem at all .. But if you have a DD or take long road trips, those big open vents are going to be an issue if you get caught in a downpour. just my opinion ..its your car... enjoy
