There is no such thing as an "easy removal" of a 40 year-old foam/vinyl dash cap. For SAFE removal, you would need to remove the front windshield to allow easy removal. If you don't remove the windshield, you have to "bend" that hardened, brittle, weak dash cap. It's best to work from underneath OR loosen and pull the driver's/passenger's dash panel outward to gain some access. You can remove dash cap fasteners and pull it outward a bit too. Wish you luck...
You can go to this pdf it should walk you through everything. I understand what 7t-1 is talking about with the pads being brittle, and it's always a possibility you'll crack it.
On the flip side, rarely do I break one though, and more commonly people are wanting the pad replaced anyway.

You didn't post what year the car was and when you said upper everyone assumed it was a 1968-1977 car, this is a 1978-1982 dash pad.
I am getting a little worried here then , my UK log book states it's a 1976 car , I have lots of parts due to land from USA carpets and T top weather seals , how can I define exactly the year of the car...
Ps it's my first American car I have restored ?
If its an early model the best way is to take out the A pillar moldings. You still have to be careful but this gives a little more room so you don't have to bend it too much.

How about posting pictures of the actual car for starters. Yes if you ordered carpet for a 76 and the car is a 78-82 the carpet won't fit, if the car is a 76 with a 78-82 dash pad then the carpet will fit but you have a plethora of knowledge on this forum so post us some pictures and we'll try to help you figure it out.
1976 floor panels were common to 1976 only, 1977 was different, then 1978-1979, then 1980-1982........So carpet wise it makes a huge difference.
