Default Engine and Trans combos???

Hey all, there is a 1979 vette in my area without a motor or tranny that I am considering buying. It has the clutch linkage remaining, which makes this project easier.
I am thinking about undertaking this project. For this car, I dont need much power, I just would like decent MPG(around 25 is fine) and reliability. That being said I would like to keep total cost for this combo under 1k( I will do work myself). This, I'm assuming, takes LS swaps out of the question. Could anyone give me suggestions as to which engines and transmissions will fit in the C3? I found some cheap 6 speed manual miata transmissions in my area.
Also, I have experience working with cars, and there is a DIY auto shop very close to my house and where the vette is. With all the tools there, and the fact that the engine and transmission are already out, could someone give me an estimate as to how much time this will take?
I live in an area with no snow for like a 200 mile radius so rust isn't too much of an issue

Thanks

Welcome new person. You'll have more questions. LIkely, some better answers may depend on geography.

Suggest you go into your public profile (same window you entered country and gender) and post your state/city.

No we don't need to know your address or exactly where car is.

$1000 is way too low, Find a decent sbc and muncie/borg warner 4 speed. Forget Miata.

There 's a least 1 or 2 motor-trans combos here at CF in C3 parts for sale ... way more than $1K.

Even if someone gave you a decent combo, just the ancillary parts alone (brackets etc) will probably cost you over $1K.

Don't get your hopes too high on the gas mileage.
These cars never got that kind of MPG.
They don't have overdrive.
15 or so might be more common.
