I have my rebuild completed with cam break in done and hopefully rings seated after following the Haynes manual on breaking in a complete rebuild. Question is although the car starts and runs okay, when I set the timing I-rotated the distributor as far as it would go clockwise. The problem is the timing mark is just to the edge of the timing tab at idle and warmed up. Is this normal?
You are probably a tooth off on the distributor. I would would pull it, rotate slightly and reinstall. You can use a long screwdriver to adjust the oil pump drive if necessary.
You don't have to line up the pump and the distributor at all. Pull the distributor up, move it over a notch, and tap the starter. As the distributor comes around, it will fall into line with the oil pump and drop down. Are you using a timing light to set the engine? If not, look up the technical papers written by Lars and others on setting the timing on an engine. There is a wealth of information contained in them. Jerry

Just e-mail me for my "Distributor Installation" tech papers. Complete with photos and instructions to get it installed right. Let me know if you have HEI or conventional points-type distributor.
Its common for the dizzy to slip one tooth when installing. Its the dizzy gear that causes that.
If you need a visual procedure of lining everything up, go to YouTube and type in: Installing distributor SBC.

If @lars posts his email in a thread, be sure to email him. Not that any of the other advice has been wrong, but his papers will walk you through the steps that everyone else has been kind enough to give you the pieces of. Ask for his timing papers, too, you may find some HP.
