[QUOTE=ratflinger;1601532549]Excellent news! Kudos for the shop owner being a standup guy. Yes, I would pay for the knowledge that the cam was Lunati and that the supplier just didn't have a Lunati tube laying around.

I had not thought of that. Sleazebags.

I'm very glad to hear the shop owner was an honest guy, be sure to spread the word that this guy stands behind his work so that he might pick up some extra business to help make up the loss. He should be able to advertise those chinese heads and sell them for a fair price to someone local.

I just could not believe that he would intentionally screw me. I'm glad now I went to talk to him instead of throwing lawyers and small claims around without giving him a chance to defend himself. He said "Dennis, I don't do business like that" and I said I did not want to believe that you did.

Hope his supplier gets chinese virus. /QUOTE]

Thats good news for you, not so much for your mechanic. I would either check the cam myself or ask him to verify it since they all came from the same A hole. While your there, buy your mechanic lunch and a case of his favorite drink. It'll help to mend fences and show theres no hard feelings. Once hes good and lubed up get the name of the supplier and his address for us, we can get our own 'version' of a better business bureau to give "him" a house call......

I'm glad he's going to make it right. I agree get the guy a 50 dollar gift card to a good restaurant and take him to lunch. He's taking a hit but he may end up ok. It would be nice to know his supplier. Keep us posted on what happens.

Wow, that is a bad story. I hope you get it all set and can move on. Trusting people used to be a common thing, I still do for the most part but have had similar experiences.

The local shop here that was recommended turned out to be yet another con man. This was 15 years ago but we dropped off our 350 to be bore 030, hot tanked, new cam bearings install, and the new pistons installed on the pink rods, this was an original L82. This was my sons project and I let him make the deal as a learning experience. What we didn't know is this con man made a good bit of money off those that trusted him, especially young guys. This was documented here at the time and there was another young guy here that also got suck up by this con man. The price changed 3x in a week, the work was rushed out, the cam didn't fit- I had to deburr the bearings he hammered in, the bores were all 006 oversize resulting in huge ring gaps, the pink rods were swapped out for passenger car rods. Long story short, I cancelled payment- he called the cops, they laughed. I called the cops since he stole my rods and I had before and after pictures of them, the cops said I didn't have a case. Went to small claims, he hired a lawyer and tried to scare me away, then he paid to push the case to superior court figuring I would go away, was offered to bring my case to TV on the People's Court- I agreed he declined, this went on for 2 years with him trying to get it kicked out of court until the eve of our trial and he had his lawyer settle. I didn't get everything back but covered replacement parts, he is still in business and hasn't changed from what I hear. BTW- People's Court was in NY at the time, would pay for travel and my judgement when I won. I asked if the other guy gets paid and was told no but they would cover his expenses and the judgement against him when I won. So he wins there too, however he knew he was caught and didn't want to show his face on TV.

Another guy brought me his TA's one time. He said he had a local shop rebuild them and he gave them new Timkens. I took the arms apart in front of him- no Timkens to be found- instead cheap Mexican and Chinese bearings were used as I recall. Oe axle had 1/8" play the other was binding because they didn't install a shim. When he confronted the shop owner he was told they sent them out to someone else, marked them up and sold them.

Then there was the 12 bolt diff done by a con man here that came apart with 2k miles on it, when you buy cutrate you get cutrate, the con man isn't going to take a pay cut. I could go on but what's the sense. To me the thought process today seems to be to cash in now before the guys who are into cars retire or die, quality be damned.

I wish you and the others the best. A honest shop will stand behind their work, provide pictures and details of the work. Con men will tell you everything you want to hear, get a big deposit, and never respond to your inquires and if you do get a hold of them will tell you they spent your deposit, sorry.

I am so glad that's not what this turned into. I guess I've been lucky, I've never been seriously hosed, I don't think, on car work.

Maybe I'll finally get to enjoy my steering box again soon.
