I think the first thing you should do is get fresh fuel in it before anything else....

I agree on the fuel, you cannt tell anything until you get fresh fuel in the car.
Even with a choke on a 3310-1 780 CFM I pump the gas 3 times before turning the key.

My race car buddy tends to agree with the guys saying possible exhaust noise or exhaust leak.....I guess it could be a small.leak that seals with heat or just the echomoff the thin wall off the header...maybe

Try less initial advance if you are sure you are getting pinging at cranking. If that solves the problem you can always buy a retard module for cranking that reverts to standard timing after cranking.

it would be nice to have centrif advance that jumps 5 to 10 degrees at 100 rpms. set it at 0 to crank and jumps to 10 at idle.or 5 and 15.

yes, going to try that.
But my 11 deg at idle isnt much for a chevy big block.

Did you check if the original nylon advance stop under the advance cam is broken or gone?
