Cruzing the other day in my 1973 Convertible......hot as the sun outside but car is running fine and no signs of overheating. All of a sudden the tachometer quits working.....no real problem says I.....I'll figure out if it's the distributor gear or the cable or whatever,,,,,no sweat.
Next day I start the car to move it into the work bay in the shop.....tach working fine......no problems since and I've driven it several times......any ideas on what happened?
There aren't a lot of choices as to cause. At least check connections of cable to Disc as well as make certain it is snapped in the keeper lock on the back of the tach. If it was really hot, may have opened up clearances in Dist gearing. All else fails, drive it and enjoy it, if it totally quits it will be easier to find. Intermittent operation problems can drive you nuts trying to find the source!!
Likely a problem with the connection between cable and gear (1/8" square drive socket). If the pieces are worn, the cable can just spin in the receiver hole. If the cable happens to move deeper into the drive hole, it could again pick up on a 'good' portion of the square drive. Just check out those features.
It could also be that one of the gears in the tach head are getting worn and you are getting intermittant engagement of that gear which moves the indicator.
