That hole is for a **** that controls an air door at the ball vent to the left. Your passenger dash should have one too. The **** looks like a '70s door lock **** on passenger cars.
Here's a Forum thread on the assembly with pics and diagrams.
Well that explains it, there's no door, and both lower ball vents are falling out of their places from behind.
There is no link in your post.
I'll let qualified personnel install relays (I've screwed up enough stuff already). If it was a simple matter of installing something inline to existing wire I'd have tried it.
I put my dimmer switch inside an anti-static bag, and tucked the whole thing underneath the carpet.
Out of sight, out of mind!
Quick update. I noticed this morning (heavy fog) that my headlight dash switch seems to be working as expected now. It lit up when I turned on my lights and as soon as they were fully open, it went back off. Tried it a second time when I got to work. Not a fluke, goes out when fully open now.

Don't know why, but...
That's great - wanna fix mine now? While I was helping you figure out your headlights I decided to verify why my dash headlight indicator wasn't working, but it appears that I either have a burned out bulb, or a previous owner took out the bulb (and I'm not tearing into the console just for that!). My indicator switches at the headlights are broken also, so just not worth it...
My courtesy lights no longer come on. I checked the wire going to the drivers side door and it looks like I crimped it when I put my kickplate back on, so I spliced it back together but they're still not working.
