Been getting brake issues straightened out. In that process notice brake light did not light when ign. turned nor when e-brake handle pulled up. Dropped st. wheel and pulled inst. panel.
all the lights to turn sig., bright head lights, speedo and tack all worked except the brake light. Thought the bulb was missing or burnt out.
As it turns out the brake light was burnt out. I replaced it.
When I plugged the harness back in there are no lights and tach not working.
Checked ALL fuses, have power to harness. also checked reostat on head light switch. I plugged the speedo cable back in case it is used as a ground. What should I check now?
It's like a ground issue but I see no way to ground the plastic cluster. Thanks, Mike
I think it will only plug in one way, if it has been apart a few times the printed circuit tabs, connectors or whatever they are called will be bent backwards, sideways or even broken off, I had to get a new printed circuit because mine was in bad shape where the harness plugs in.
i think as stated above.. visually look at flex board and be sure you didn't jamb the spectacularly crappy foil like connections.. that can also move.. line it up perfect..
Most likely a 'grounding' issue. The question is 'Where?'. The PCB is a good bet; don't know what dedicated ground wires may be lurking in the speedo cluster of your model year car.
Just re checked all the instrument lights are working. No turn signal, bright light indicator or brake light. I have a new pointer on the tach but cant get it to stay on the shaft so Don't know if the tach is working.
You are missimg a ground in that area or those lights would be working. You can experiment with a simple piece of wire (AWG 16 or larger). With the ignition key to ON (engine not started) and interior lights and turn signal activated (L or R), touch or connect one end of the wire to known good ground point. Touch the other end to something metal in the speedo area. If the lights begin to work, there's your answer. You can either identify the missing ground (best alternative) or route a 'substitute' ground wire similar to your test line. Make certain it is large enough to handle all current needed for that area [+20-30% for safety]. The small wire you used for your test was only to evaluate the problem; a 16 AWG wire isn't large enough to handle all the current for that area continuously.
Looks like the passenger side top and bottom are your circuit board grounds.
Those terminals are 100% Copper, brighten them up with a small piece of scotch brite.
The grounds are common (circuit 150) so if some of the bulbs are working and others are not it is in the circuit board or the connection to the board.

1977-1982 used the same Circuit Board Copper terminals...
These are from a cut string, just like they get stamped out.
