Drains are on both sides in the middle near the oil pan ledge. The wire terminal in your picture is on the way of seeing it. Might need to poke thru the gunk if nothing flows out easy.

if you had it upside down without intake it all ran out already. be doubly sure. roll it upside down without heads.

So #1 (and or) #2 are the coolant drains? I pulled #3 when I tried the other day.

And FYI, engine is still in the car so I can't turn it upside down haha

A good opportunity to clean out the water area around cylinders.

remove the plugs, use something to break up the sediment.

force water down the holes on the deck.

this will sound crazy but, i used a pressure washer to blowout all the crud that gathers at the bottom of block around cyl.

there will be a lot.

yes water goes everywhere and expect water in the pan/// and gallies.

Seeing as how a blown head gasket had already flooded the block with water I had nothing to lose.

I took care to oil rings and get all the water out, used the oil pump to force oil thru the gallies, took off oil pressure sender to watch for good clean oil.

Yes, a couple oil filters were wasted, oil was wasted, but after decades of sediment in the block, it was worth it to clean that crap out.

Yeah I planned on doing a flush with the plugs out. After I put the helicoil in I figured it would leave a bit of shavings in the block... Wanted to get those out.

Can you confirm the plugs are #1 and 2 in the picture?

Next...the hole may be blocked with crud...stick a screwdriver into the hole to see id crud and coolant pour out (into a bucket).

#1 and 2 as far as I recall are for the oil. #3 I don't remember.
When I opened mine not a drop came out until I started poking with a screwdriwer, then about a quart or two of water came out.

i don't like messing with pipe plugs that have been there for 50 years. stick a skinny hose on a shop vac and go in and down thru water pump holes. or straight down thru biggest one in the block deck.

#1 and #2 in that pic do not look like factory installed plugs so they haven't been there 50 years. I drain my block through the #1 location on each side. You need to drain both sides separately. Assuming you can get the plug out, if its not a coolant drain, clean it and put it back. Can't hurt.

I usually install drain ***** on mine to make draining easier.

it is not a boat. it doesn't have a half of a river bed full of sand down there. it was full of clean green antifreeze? then that last maybe a quart left is the same stuff. don't mess with the drain plugs.

Pass side head is back on, the helicoil held! Torqued the long bolts to about 76 ft lbs and the short ones around 65.5 or so.

Finally got my hands on the intake and... Too small? The part number is 5061. I assumed all BBC engines could use the same intake, and looking at the website it looks like this should also fit a 396... What am I missing?

Edit: did some digging, looks like due to the heads being larger oval ports, it won't fit. I think that's why the previous owner went with the rectangular intake, apparently it's supposed to provide good flow with this particular manifold/head combo

I know very little about this stuff but I'm fairly good are googling stuff...from Edelbrock:

Edelbrock part #5061 Torker II 2-O intake manifold is designed for street 396-502 c.i.d. Chevy V8's with large oval-port cylinder heads (1975 and earlier). Manifold not equipped with EGR. Will not fit "tall block" V8 engines.

I saw that as well, pretty sure mine isnt a tall deck -- but that's just going by the water pump bolt hole measurement.

There is nothing wrong with this intake. Use a 1210 Fel_Pro gasket for this.....easiest to seal up and heat riser is blocked.
The black in your red circle is the carbon created by reversion from the rec port intake. The blue circle is from the core that cast the heat riser port from the factory and is irrelevant...does not need to be covered.
You need to clean this up along the head intake mounting face with a 3M roloc bristle disc on a 90 degree air die cutter.
The Torker 2-O is a 35+ year design and fits ALL short deck oval port Big Blocks.....even the small "peanut port" truck heads.
Whether you care about performance or not is your call....but the Torker will outflow and run better than that terrible Weiand intake.

Gotcha. Looking at it vs the old one I wasn't sure about that heat riser port being exposed, I thought the gasket mentioned would just block it internally but the manifold itself would still cover it. Makes sense though.

So finally -- after a long week, I got everything in. I had gotten an engine dressup/belt system for the car but I didn't know the front pulley was going to be an issue and hit the front crossmember. After a bit of research, I found that it's a common issue for some of these kits. So I notched out a piece of the frame and dabbed/welded a new semicircle piece where I cut. Worked out pretty good! After that I got everything else bolted in. New oil pan, gaskets everywhere, etc... I also swapped the intake to a performer rpm instead of the torker (long story). I have a modified hood so everything should still fit. I'm still a bit away from starting it up so hopefully everything goes well!

I appreciate all the help I got on this thread!
