I was just reading another thread and the OP mentioned they adjusted the belts on their big block and set the tension using the idler pulley.
When I pulled the oem big block engine out of my 73 there was no idler pulley on the fan belt system.
Was there supposed to be one on a 73 big block model with ac and power steering?
Just wondering if I need to install one when the new engine goes in?
Thanks!
If your '73 454 came with factory AC, then yes, you should have an idler pulley. I assume that you have been running the crank to water pump belt without the idler pulley. If it has worked well for you, then you don't have to worry about installing an idler pulley. But if it is something you want to do, then just purchase the parts and install it.
Good luck.

You would also need the lock washer and nut for the stud below to lock down the idler pulley when the tension is set.
