Default Hot air cleaner

Drove my 1970 350 roadster the other day, it was 90 degrees outside, water temperature was about 195 degrees, drove about 25 miles then remembered to check fuel line at carburetor (it was leaking and I had retighten) no leaks, BUT the air cleaner was too.hot to touch. Why, ? I literally had to use A rag to remove air cleaner...

The air cleaner is going to be the same temperature as the rest of the engine: If your engine is at 195, you have 195-degree air blasting back from the fan and hitting the air cleaner. Try removing a 195-degree pan out of the oven... Nothing abnormal about the air cleaner being too hot to touch on a hot engine.

This is the truth. I've had to use gloves or an old rag to take mine off after driving.

You can wrap some pot roast and veggies wrapped in aluminum foil put it on your intake and go for a long drive and have a tasty dinner ready. Plus the car will smell wonderful 😊
Seriously, it's an oven.

Have you considered switching to a 180 thermostat?

Switching the thermostat won't reduce the running temperature of the engine. It will only set the LOWEST POSSIBLE operating temperature of the engine. Once the thermostat is fully open, the rest of the cooling system sets the operating temperature.
The thermostat is there to help get the engine up to decent operating temps quickly and also to assure good engine temps in cold weather.

Exactly, there is no reason to believe the lowest temperature will Not be reduced by going to a 180 since it was common prior to emissions.

If the thermostat opens at a cooler temperature and the system is capable of it the engines coolant will run cooler. Pre emissions engines ran cooler, who decided hotter temperatures were beneficial,?

The engineers at the automakers who had to come up with ways to meet Federal emissions regulations and design effective emissions systems. The hotter running temps help burn off engine emissions.

I knew that part but there are people that insist cars need to run hotter regardless of emissions .
