Rattling from bell housing area. Just rebuilt the Muncie and installed it. It was making this noise before I rebuilt it and I thought it was the transmission. Now it's getting worse.

Noise from the bellhousing area has nothing to do with the transmission. That's a clutch/pressure plate/throwout bearing/pilot bearing/clutch fork problem. Disassemble it and inspect it. Replace the bad parts.

DHer,

The above is usually 95% of the issues you describe.

Here are 5% more.
Both motor mounts appear ok?
Trans mount ok?
Cracks or missing bolts in bellhousing?
These ^^^^^ are all "alignment" checks.

Spring missing on clutch fork?
Dust / stone shield rattle?
Z-bar pivot ball in the block tight & ok?

Try removing the flywheel cover and see if it changes. Does the noise change as it warms up?

Why would someone rebuild a transmission and not check the clutch assembly and related parts?

Hmmm.... 1.) Doesn't know better; 2.) It worked before; 3.) Needed to save money.

When you change that bearing, make sure that there is some "free play" in the clutch pedal. Having constant pressure on that bearing [even if its light pressure] is a major cause of early failure.
