Does anyone know for certain, whether the nose of the starter for a manual transmission is a smaller diameter than for an automatic? There are definitely two different listings in the parts houses, and my flywheel is definitely a 168 tooth, the same as the flexplate that was originally in the TH400 that I removed. However, the original starter does not fit into the hole in the bell housing. The diameter of the hole in the bell housing is measuring about 2 7/8 inch vs about 3 1/8 inch that my starter measures. My biggest worry is that the aftermarket bell housing that I purchased, aligned, and installed is incorrect. It was sold as a '621 bell housing, which I beleive should be the correct part, but the clutch fork that came with the bell housing was not correct. This is a 1972 turbo 400auto to Tremec TKX conversion.
Not enough facts.
Exactly which starter are you planning to use ?
A big, old heavy direct drive delco remy 10MT as C3 was delivered with as OE
OR
A more modern starter? Be specific model number etc.
The cast iron nose cone starter would be the original style starter for the "621" bellhousing. Your automatic transmission starter has an aluminum nose cone that will not work with the "621" .
We have another thread about starters you might want to read. It has information about the newer PG26O style Remy starter. I highly suggest going that route. It's what I run on my TKX conversion.
Thanks stingr69. I purchased one listed for the manual transmission. Cast iron nose, as you mentioned, and definitely smaller nose diameter. I think the ring gear is also longer to match the flywheel being thicker than the flex plate.
