Default 1972 Engine code vs transmission

Hi - I looked at a 1972 vette for sale, the engine stamp matches the body VIN so it appears to be original. The 3 letter engine code is CKX which according to my notes is an automatic transmission but the car has a 4 speed manual. Any idea what's up with that? Did someone modify & replace the automatic with the manual transmission? Or is my interpretation of the code wrong?

That’s the correct code for an automatic alright. You can check the transmission crossmember though. Manual cars are welded while automatics are bolted in.

Hello,
Did you look for the stamp on the transmission case?
It was typically stamped using the same gang stamp holder and done at the same time as the engine's VIN derivative stamp.
