Default Correct length for inner and outer tack cable

1972 350.

I replaced the tack cable a few years ago, and it's never really worked properly. My understanding is that the inner cable is a little bit too long and causes binding. I put a washer under the collar on the distributor side which seem to help the problem. But it still binds up when it's cold. And now the cable is making a whining noise when it gets to about 3500 RPM.

I purchased another aftermarket cable, with the intention of shortening it, but I can't seem to find the correct specifications for length of the inner and outer cables. I thought that the outer cable was about 19 and a half, and the inner cable just a little bit longer. I no longer have the original cable to take any measurements.

Does anyone have the exact specifications?

Thanks

If your distributor isn't correctly clocked the cable will have issues. Chevrolet issued a bulletin concerning this in 1968.
Look at diagram in post 4 in this link.

Have you ever removed the driven gear and put grease in the distributor cavity.

Hello,
Here are a couple of photos showing the distributor 'clock' that MW describes and the illustration indicates.
It allows the vacuum advance can to clear the spark plug wire support.
It also puts the tach cable connection in a good position so the cable doesn't develop a 'kink'.
Regards,,,,,,,

Hello,
This is the typical position for the connection for the tach cable.
Note gentle curve.
Is your's similar?
Regards....
