i am interested in replacing my mufflers in my 82. i want a deep rumble sound. what do you guys recommend? when i had my 84, i purchased a test pipe that eliminated the catalytic converter. do they sell this for the 82 as well?
If you're looking for a test pipe, there are a few on ebay here and there.
As far as mufflers, there are a whole bunch of possibilities. I think I am going to get a pair of Borla ProXS mufflers when it comes time to do the exhaust.
I put a set of Borla's on my 82, and hollowed out the cat.
I get a nice deep rumble, no resonance, and its not overly loud like a set of flowmaster's would be.
Ive got a set of the Monza type mufflers with dual tips out of each muffler coming out the back (the muffler looking ones, not the straight pipe looking ones). It looks spectacular IMHO and gets compliments.
The sound is a pretty good low rumble and sounds great when you step on the gas. Its kind of hard to tell, but there may be a little resonance in the 1800-2000RPM range, but it's acceptable.
I'm planning the same project. I think removing the catalytic converter would give a big performance boost. It has to be the biggest restriction in the exhaust system. Will this cause problems with the computer control system?
Removing a 25 year old cat will give you a good performance gain. They were restrictive to begin with and by now it is pretty plugged up. However, you can get inexpensive free flowing cats now from the aftermarket that pretty much don't hurt performance at all. I saw a test on a 500 hp engine and with dual cats it made the same power as open pipes.
with the dynomax mufflers and free flowing cat [hollowed] i have had no codes or problems with the computer.if you put on headers and the exhaust is realy open with out much back preasure and you could get a code, you can fix it with a o2 sensor that is heated .the 1982 cats were verry restrictive they do plug up, new ones are a better design.
