I have been driving my Vette for about 1 month and have noticed all the C3 drivers I encounter will exchange waves and thumbs up. I even had one guy in a C3 chase me down on the highway just to wave. C4 drivers will usually wave.
C5 drivers however, act as if I am invisible. I look over and they ignore me. I happened again on the way to work today.
I figure it's one of 2 things:
1) They think they are too good to wave to a C3 driver.
2) They are POed at themselves for spending 4 X the $ on a car that doesn’t not look as good as a C3.
i wave, but i thought it was just sort of a friendly thing saying "yeah we have awesome cars, and the rest of the ppl on the road dont." (sorta like the jeep wave)
is there more to "the wave"??? hidden meaning? please fill me in!
Its just a different type of vehicle. I don't wave to other Toyota Tacoma owners when I see them in my truck but I wave to C3's (and any other Vettes too).
I assume they don't understand, or don't see me. Having had a C5 I do know it is sometimes difficult to see the driver wave back from C5's unless they get their hand close to the the windshield or outside.
Last week I was out with my friend in his 55 Vette and we both waved at a C5 vert who was so surprised he almost came to a stop while he was twisting his head around to look at the 55 - he never got a wave off but at least he did not scuff his pretty wheels on the curb.

Reason: typo
I wave at all Corvettes whether I'm driving the C3 or C5. Most wave back. The ones that don't either have no clue about the wave, or they're busy watching where they're driving. How many Corvettes have gone past you that you ignored because you were paying attention to the road? If I see you I'll wave. If the car ahead of me is stopping or driving squirrelly, I may not see you go past.
None wavers a like todays Harley buyers. Bikers used to work on their bikes. Not the new generation of buyers.
Would guess C5 guys when they modify their cars are having someone do it for them. I would guess a lot of C3 owners do a lot of their own work. When I approach a job I clear it with my shop guy and get a yea you can do that. Or no let me do that one. To quote a formum member
"there are Corvette guys and then there are guys with Corvettes".
After I finished re-painting the interior parts to my 78 PC, this past weekend, and was proudly showing my Wife my accomplishments, I told her "This is what the guys in our Corvette club that have C5's are missing out on, the pride and sense of accomplishment of restoring a classic."
Don't take it personally...some people just don't get it. I actually pulled into a parking lot last night behind a maroon C-3, looked to be about a '75 or so, in nice shape. The guy that owned it was unlocking his door as I got out of my C-3. I said to him "Very nice..." He gave me the total Windex shine....nothing, didn't even acknowledge that I said anything to him.
I am glad I am not out there with a C-5. The bottom is falling out of that market. A friend of mine here at work drives a C-4 and is getting ready to pick up a '98 C-5 for 20K. Get this... the car only has 14K on the odometer. So you may be right about them P.O.'d with themselves. The original owner paid 50K for this car. Ouch!
I had a couple C5 guys wave at me and my wife in our C3, she ask why I did not wave back" I WAS TO DARN BUSY WATCHING OUT FOR ALL THE RICHARDS HEADS ON THE ROAD TRYING TO HIT ME!!!!!!!!! I just plain did not see them.
o.k. first, i wave all the time, regardless of which car i'm in. i don't get waves back from most of the vette drivers i pass. and the whole snotty attitude excuse isn't flying with me. no c5 driver out there can pull the snotty attitude on me when i'm in my 'vert.
i'm convinced it's more a matter of drivers who either aren't familiar with the history and traditions of the corvette community *OR* drivers who are just completely oblivious to what is going on around them <shiver>.
and despite the disrespect, here's a wave for ya. :
I had never heard of the wave until i joined this forum. They probobly don' know. And a lot of C5 drivers got a vette cause it's a damn good car for the money, but don't join clubs/forums where they would be exposed to tradition.
some of the nonwaving C5'ers don't recognize your car as a corvette!
I get waved at by C5 drivers all the time.
Hang on, there is hope. The new C6 will be out shortly, at which time C5 drivers will be officially driving the "old model" and will be more inclined to wave at classic models.

Market value only matters if you intend to sell...
