Larry,
You bring up a good point (that some starters are mini, some are high-torque, and some both). So to combat the heat-soak issue from headers, is the "mini" part what I'm mostly looking for?

does anybodies hi torque starter make a whining sound as it disengages and slows down? almost like the wind down of a siren?
This is directly from the POWERMASTER instructions: "If the starter makes a high pitched whine DURING cranking the pinion to ring gear engagement is too great. If the starter makes a high pitched whine AFTER cranking as the button or key is released, the clearance is too small.
POWERMASTER makes a starter like that #9200, $189.00 at Summit. I just fragged one on my current project vehicle, an 11:1 383 SBC. I took it apart to see what failed. It has a plastic toothed ring that the 3 reduction gears ride on. The gears chewed the teeth off the plastic ring after 2 days of frequent starting attempts. I suppose I can't place all the blame on them because I was pretty hard on it trying to get my new motor started and running. But why would you have a plastic piece in a high torque starter like that? Because it's the only style that fits my vehicle ('94 GMC S15 Jimmy) with proper clearance, I ordered another for $189.00. It hasn't arrived yet but when it does it'll be going back because I just ordered this one for $99.00. THANKS, this forum is GREAT!!
- 3 HP super torque
- less weight, compact design
- in case of heat soak due to header use
- less time cranking to start engine
- better clearance near headers
- it's purdy
just go to youre local salvage yard get a permenet gear starter for a 95 up 4.3 5.7 7.4 engine for 20.00 to 50.00 most yards replace them for life get the bolts to because they are differant. the heat problem and less amps to turn over and is smaller and for the plastic pinion gear in the starter if that was not plastic and youre engine back fired like it did you would be fixing the block get the picture . that gear is very easy to change and cost only 10.00 dollars and any one with a envertide e5 torx socket and 10 mm can change it

I installed a high torque starter about a month ago after putting up with heat soak for the first year I've owned the car.
I noticed the high pitched whine after cranking. I also have a "ticking" sound when I put the car into reverse. When I installed the starter I noticed that the clearance or lack of clearance between the starter teeth and the flywheel with the starter in the fully dis-engaged position. I noticed that the original oem starter's gear was further back than the new one. Is there a cure to this situation? It doesn't make any sound when you start it, just after releasing the key and when it's in gear. I might have to go back to an oem style starter. I did reinstall the same shim that came out of it.
