I was passed by an unmarked on highway 285 in CO last week. I was going about 82 in a 65(not in my vette) he just flashed his lights at me as he went by. Maybe I just got lucky.
I used to live in Bailey on US 285 - where I got that ticket - a couple miles east of Crow Hill - by O'Malley's(?) store (at the time). I had just been cut off by someone second guessing themselves about getting over into the right lane as I move to pass them. Accelerating the Kawasaki ZX-11 to squirt out of the squeeze between the car on my right merging back into my lane and on-coming traffic - getting past that little crisis - I'm greeted with an other car approaching and going to turn left in front of me. The gal was distracted and when I see the wheels start to turn toward me, I down shifted and hammered thru the intersection. I think the CHP was kind for 12 over, but WTF! I wonder what he would have done in the same situations (typical for bikers, as bikers know!!)
Being in control of your car reminds me of the skier code. Ski and ride with care and know your terrain and your abilities. Living in Steamboat Springs, CO I am much better at speeds on the mountain than I am at high performance driving. So I know what I can and can't do and will not endanger anyone on the road. "I hope" I also agree that there needs to be more public access to tracks. Here is another CO patrol story. A friend of ours was driving to work here in Steamboat last winter and the roads were icy and snow packed. Cars were off the road everywhere on Highway 40. The next thing he knows is that he is getting pulled over. He didn't understand what was going on. The cop said he was driving to slow and it was dangerous. He told him if he noticed all the cars in the ditch. The officer let him off with a warning like he was doing him a favor. That is wrong. CO is still a great place to live.
You just can't seem to get your logic to stick to some of those cops. You aren't endangering anything driving a performance car like a Vette 10 over on a perfectly empty stretch of interstate. If it was a van full of highschool football players with 9 lbs. of air in the tires and a 40mph cross wind, that would be saving lives. But No; they'd rather hide in the shadows, like a purse snatcher, and drag in a few bucks for the state by doing a high speed catch of cars that are perfectly safe at half again the posted limit. If they really want to save lives, then why not man all those intersections where 3 cars run the red on every cycle of the light! Most people get messed up when hit broadside below 40mph. and guess where that happens... not on the interstate!
I was going to post a long response, but I am not even going to waste my time. For those of you who think speeding is not a crime and I was in control of my vehicle, I say come with me to the next fatal accident I work. I can close my eyes at night in bed and see the carnage over and over and over and over again.
How many "speed only single vehicle accidents" on the interstate do you guys work - on average, say per year?
Blatant reckless speeding in urban areas, suburbs, main streets and "in the village" is not only illegal but stupid and dangerous.... no argument there.
But I want to get back to the question about the number of single vehicle (or even multiple vehicle) accidents involving high speed on open stretches of interstate in the rural areas during daylight hours.
I mean this is the place most folks choose to "stretch the legs" of their cars... and this seems to be the place LEO's are most eager to catch people.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist or actuary to figure out those speed-traps are not about safety, but rather revenue..
I gota agre with everone .. i hate the cops that sit on the side of the road waiting for someone to come speeding by.
i got nailed doing 83 in a 65 by one of Urainia's finest.
it was 166 dollar ticket

For the most part, I agree with you, I realized many years ago that the streets were not my own personal race course. For the most part I obey the limit and the few times that I don't, I certainly wouldn't say it was the officers fault for ticketing me.
The thing that bothers me about speeding tickets is this, in my 34 years as a licensed driver, I have seen many speeders and by and large, the very worst and most common speeders are cops. I don't mean cops with flashing lights going to an emergency, I mean cops cruising. I have had cops get right on my *** when I was going 5 over until I had a chance to get into the right lane and then have the fly by me.
So let me ask you this, would you ticket a fellow officer??
See you miss the point, even 1 single vehicle accident that results in a death is to many.
No I don't miss the point got the point EXACTLY.
Let's rephrase the question - How many lives have been saved by sitting behind a bush on an empty rural stretch of interstate and ticketing single cars for going 20mph over the limit?
The answer?
Who carse, the revenue sure beats any othewr type of enforcement - right
Here in Hawaii: 30 over the posted limit or 80 anywhere is a misdemeanor with a requirement for 2-5 days in jail or 36 hours of community service.
Driving the speed limit and setting a good example for my young children keeps me at 5 to 10 over the posted limit. Painfull as it is...
You need to get some newly elected officials in your state. If the jails are that vacant in Hawaii that they need to arrest speeders who go 30 over the limit and classify them as criminals (Misdemeanor) and the work load in the local Pct is that slow that they can process a 5 hour arrest (Average time to process a person) something is wrong with the way they are running things in the Aloha state.
The week after I bought my '88 it was announced colo. spgs was no. 2 or 3 in the nation for writing tickets. With all the cell phones these days I find lonely mountain roads to go fast. PARTY ON!!!
common guys really? its a Corvette, not a Honda minivan. Of course im 21 and of course in my vette im gonna drive over 55mph. Im not sure if your just old and bought your vette as a mid life crisis, but lets be realistic its a proformance car and who does 55 anywhere anyways. I had complete control. you two need to grow a pair
Most of the C5/C6 drivers around here are driving well below the speed limit, just today on my way back from a stop in the Home Depot in my 6litre Silverado work truck, a guy in a brand new white C6 with temporary tags pulled up along side of me at a light. I was gonna roll down my window and ask hime it he thought his new C6 could outrun my C4 (95A4) or my C5 (01M6), but it soon became obvious the he would not out run my Silverado. It was kinda funny as I ran side by side with him for about 4 miles on a nice curvy 50MPH posted speed limit, and there were a ton of cars behind him most likey.
I find no value driving either of my cars below the speed limit, at the same time I do not drive over the speed limit in residental areas. But do take it up to speed on the hiway, but only after I've made a dry run to clear the area.
Be safe.

If you get a ticket for breaking the law, tough *******, why come moaning about it here. And I do have a lot of respect for the cops - when I see a bike cop pointing his laser in my manor I'm happy to see him. Lets see how much you hate them next time some weirdo's trying to bust in your house at 3am or some careless idiots cause a huge fug up on the freeway at 6'o clock and you're trying to get home to see your family.
I'm not saying I've never speeded, and I'm not supporting the argument that speed is the cause of all accidents, and I did do some pretty dumb things on the road in my late teens, but getting busted in a fair game (and it is a game) then complaining to us about your ticket and slagging off cops just makes you look stupid
/RANT
god bless the mass state police (sneaky bastards) gave the batmobile her first ticket (first of the season?) maybe this breaks the ice for the rest of you and I take one for the team. 82 in a 55 and $150. maybe time to invest in radar detector. just thought id share, feel free to ridicule and remark.
Why not just drive the speed limit
Cops can be sneaky but guess what...if you were driving in a car with your family and some asshat cuts you off or damn near drives you off the road you'd wish they'd be around and thankfully they are and it's people like you who keep them busy
I saw a dumb bitch driving like an ******* and thought that if I had the chance to catch up to her i'd let her know how I felt and chewed her *** out but low and behold...just a few miles ahead down the road I saw said vehicle pulled over by a state trooper
She clearly was in a hurry but speeeding and getting caught will ONLY make you even later then if you just drove the speed limit
I do not know if the stuff works. But, I have seen some type of blocker that you can spray on your liscense plates in car magazines. According to the ads claim, it is supposed to make your tags invisible to lasers.

RC45, I agree with you on that. I have never and never will sit behind a bush or a billboard and nab a speeder, I think the cops in the small towns that set up speed traps are a holes and I have no use for them.
And to skybolt 31, yes I would and I have ticketed cops before. Please understand what professional courtesy is. Its knowing that sometimes on that dark road and you are going full tilt with the a hole drunk or career criminal who does not want to go back to jail and would kill you to stay out of jail and your nearest backup is 5 minutes away (and 5 minutes is a lifetime when you are full out fighting for your life) when the off duty officer stops to assist.
I have been pulled over and I never take it for granted that I will not get a ticket because I am a cop, but I can asure you that I will not give the officer lip or a hard time. If he gives me the ticket so be it, if not because I am a cop than I appreciate it. I can tell you that most cops just want a little respect and that the nice approach will get you a verbal warning more times that not. But also remember that their are cops out their who would ticket their mother.
Oh and by the way the last corvette I pulled over who was speeding (88 in a 55) got a verbal warning and I spent about 10 minutes talking corvette with him. We are not all ******!
For those of you who cry about speeding tickets. Why are you advertising your lack of self control, immaturity and poor driving habits here. Grow up !!! We don't care.
Speeding tickets yah I've had my share.Got pulled over for doing 130mph in a 30mph school zone. It was 3am (deserted road and I got a warning) Most cops are pretty cool guys with a very tough job.
Years later and I haven't had a ticket in 14 years.I still go fast but I'm VERY careful about when and where.
It isn't just about driving, it's about DRIVING AND THINKING AT THE SAME TIME.
You see less and less of that these days.
A speeding vehicle is in the top 10 list for indications of a possible drunk driver.
Not only does the speeder violate the speed restrictions, but they are also the inpatient ones who cut other vehicles off in traffic, tailgate, make bad passes, passes in no passing zones.
I would hope that the few of you that are complaining now - won't be the ones later that cry the loudest - if a speeder would happen to kill any member of your family. God, I hope it nevers happens to any of you.
I worked law enforcement for 33 years, covered a many bad injury or fatality accident and not all were related to speed. But even at the speed limit w/ another infraction of the law is deadly.
I just know that when I was 16-17 (about 10 years ago) I received my share of speeding tickets. And, for a young person, it can create a dislike of policemen. Why? There I was working at K-Mart for minimum wage, about 20-25 hours a week (b/c of school), and a cop would get me for 10 over the limit. BAM! (I am in Texas) there goes my ENTIRE paycheck for a week and sometimes then some. I could not go to defensive driving because I worked every saturday (welcome to retail). Ridiculous. No cop ever gave me a verbal warning when I was younger. NEVER. NOT ONCE. And I was polite and everything and admitted my mistake. Talk about some BS. I knew that I should slow down. And getting a ticket didn't make me realize that. And the reasons I sped were maybe so I could get home quickly and call a girlfriend or I was excited to meet my friend at the bowling alley so that we could play pool. It was like a good pure reason to be speeding: because I was young, excited and happy to get to where I was going (didn't have too many friends just 3 close ones so it meant a lot to me). And the cop pulls me over and takes it all away. ALL AWAY. No money for next week to stay out of trouble (eating out, arcade, dating, playing pool, renting video games/movies, etc etc). So you know what? It affected me and my friends (b/c they weren't gonna pay my way) So we would do some illegal things (ie: stealing, spray painting). Why? Well I don't have money for the week and there is nothing better to do in this small town. I am telling you guys. I know I am gonna take some heat for this post, but getting those tickets affected my young life in a negative way. That is, when i got pulled over for speeding. It was like cause and effect. Do cops not realize this? Do cops not realize that a verbal warning can be better sometimes for younger drivers? Anyway...I am not blaming tickets totally on the way I was acting at times (vandalism) but I am saying that it definitely affected me in a bad way.
Be that as it may, I realize that I am prone to get a ticket if I speed (in a freakin' vette man!). I am ready to pay the fine (can easily afford it now). I am not going to like it, but I know that I blatantly broke the law. I just think cops should go a little easier on young people.

Designer Imagines A Corvette That Looks More Like a Corvette Than the Corvette
Slideshow: A Jaguar designer's personal project imagines what a modern front-engined Corvette might look like if Chevrolet revisited the golden age of the Stingray.
