First, my Vette didn't have a VSS, so I had to buy the speed pulse generator. That's been working fairly well, but it took a while to get working right.

Second, and most importantly, the directions are too quiet. Even if I turn the volume up all the way on the voice direction menu. The problem is no matter what you choose for an option regarding your music (volume down, mute, etc), it only does it for the front speakers. So if you're like me, you've got your music fully balanced around the drivers seat. This means I've got most of the music going to the 6x9's in the back, which means I can't hear Dorthy (that's what I call my GPS's voice) over the music. I'm gonna get on the horn with JVC once I get my Vette back and see if there's a way to fix that, because otherwise the voice directions are useless to me, unless I have the music off.

Otherwise it's a GREAT system. Loud, clear, etc. The DVD's play very well while driving. At least that's what my passengers say. The ipod adapter works most excellent, and my favorite feature, the bluetooth adapter, is absolutely phenomenal.
What is a VSS?

Vehicle Speed Sensor. Sorry for the delay, forgot about this thread for a few days. Most newer cars have it, it's especially useful for speed-controlled radios, like where the volume increases or decreases

Why didn't your car have a VSS?

I didn't realize that 85s had the VSS delete option

J/K man, but you might want to look on the side of your trans...............I'm pretty sure you'll find a VSS

Well, it's there, technically. It's just not the correct output for the stereo. I tapped into it, and the stereo doesn't recognize it.

When I went to a car stereo place to ask about this (pretty decent one in the area) they showed me a diagram to add relays and amplifiers to the signal.

So while technically it does have a VSS, it's not the correct output for the head unit. I was tempted to build the circuit, to make it work...but I just broke down and got the speed pulse generator.

The VSS is for the speedo, there is a wire in the stock HU wiring for the variable Spped amplifier. Tap into that and you have solved your problem.

Not likely on an 85.
